Haddad Maia Continues her Fairytale Run
The 26-year old has not let up this tournament. She came out of the gate running, and hasn’t looked back.
In this tournament alone, she’s upset Canadian Leylah Fernandez, World No. 1 Iga Swiatek, Belinda Bencic, and most recent Pliskova. She defeated Pliskova 6-4, 7(9)-6(7), to book herself a spot in the final match in Toronto.

In her first WTA 1000 final, she’s go up against a more than worthy opponent in Halep. But can Haddad Maia continue her fairytale run, and come out on top?
Halep Looks for Third National Bank Open Title
Prior to this year, Halep struggled with a bit of injury that took her away. During this time, a lot of up and coming superstars paved their path, so no one was really sure if Halep could come back and ever return to her dominating form she once had. Cut to this year, and the Romanian is right back to where she left off.

She didn’t have the toughest draw here in Toronto, but she’s definitely been tested. She held off the young superstar Coco Gauff in the quarterfinals, and recently defeated Pegula in a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win.
With the win, she’s back in familiar territory, a finals match. Halep will be looking to collect her third title here in Canada.
Fourth Career Meeting
This will be the fourth encounter between Haddad Maia and Halep, and the third one this year. Prior to this year, the two’s one and only meeting came way back at Wimbledon 2017, where Halep won in straight sets. They then saw each other for the first time this year at the Australian Open, where Halep won again in straight sets.
But their most recent match was in the semifinals of Birmingham not too long ago, where Haddad Maia won in three, and actually went on to win the tournament.

Haddad Maia vs Halep Pick
Halep will be entering this match as the favorite for a couple of reasons. But that’s not to say that Haddad Maia won’t give her a hard time. Remember, Haddad Maia actually won their most recent match. And now, since then the 26-year old has put on a week of upsets.
But Halep is looking more and more like her best self these days. The Romanian is making little to no errors, as she goes up against her opponents. The one aspect of her game that hasn’t been where she would like it, is her serve. Which is apart of Haddad Maia’s game that could be argued has won her matches this week.
The biggest edge here is just her experience, and specifically her experience in this final. She’s a two-time champion, and should look fairly comfortable out there.
