Haddad Maia Continues to Upset
In a match that lasted just over two hours, Haddad Maia defeated former National Bank Open champion Belinda Bencic 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.Â
After losing the first set, Haddad Maia had to figure out a way to secure points, and managed to earn her first break of the day at 2-1 in the second. It was then the second break at 5-3, that allowed her to take the set and force the decider.

The third set was not straightforward either, and the Brazilian fell behind. But she managed to piece together a few winners, and eventually convert her third match point to win, and move onto the semifinals.
This is now her fifth semifinal of the season. Pliskova will be no easy feat for the 26-year old. But if Haddad Maia has taught us anything this week, it’s anything can happen. She’ll look to add Pliskova to her list of defeated players this tournament which already includes Bencic, Swiatek and Canadian Leylah Fernandez.
Pliskova Serves up Another Win
Like her semifinal opponent, Pliskova had to piece together a comeback after dropping the first set against Qinwen Zheng. This match that went well over two hours, and into the wee hours of the morning in Toronto, saw Pliskova become one step closer to making it to the National Bank Open final for the second year in a row. Pliskova won 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Zheng actually recorded six more winners that Pliskova, but struggled converting her break points. Everything looked to be going the 19-year old’s way when managed to come back and win the first set, despite going down 3-0. But it was all Pliskova in the second, forcing a decider.
Pliskova continues to utilize her strong serve to defeat her opponents. In this tournament alone, she’s averaging 8.5 aces a match. In both her round of 16 and quarterfinal match, she recorded 10.
Third Career Meeting
Haddad Maia and Pliskova have split their two previous meetings, with their current head-to-head record 1-1.
Their first meeting came way back in 2018, where Pliskova won the Australian Open match in straight sets. Most recently, they went head-to-head in 2021 at Indian Wells, where it was Haddad Maia that won in straight sets.

Haddad Maia vs Pliskova Pick
Once again, this should be an exciting match between these two. The two are playing at an extremely high level, having racked up impressive wins this week.
Pliskova’s biggest win would’ve come against Maria Sakkari in the round of 16, that tested her to her limits, but managed to come out on top. Whereas Haddad Maia’s also came in the round of 16, where she upset World No. 1 in the tennis rankings Swiatek.
Given the draw, the Brazilian has definitely been tested more than Pliskova, which may work in her advantage for this match. She hasn’t been the favorite all week, yet has been pulling these wins out. Haddad Maia might have another point to prove in this semifinal, which could give her the edge needed to win.
