The Golden State Warriors collapsed and the Boston Celtics capitalized. There’s no way to sugarcoat what happened to the Warriors in Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Thursday.
It was their game to win and they gave it away. Boston stepped up and stepped all over Golden State.
So how does that impact the way in which you should bet in Game 2 of the Finals? Well, oddsmakers are sticking with the Warriors. It’s Golden State that is established as the 4-point home pick in the opening odds for Game 2. The Warriors are 27-18-2 (60%) against the spread as a home favorite this season.

Boston has narrowly overtaken Golden State in the NBA title odds. The Warriors were also the 4-point chalk for Game 1.
A Tale of Two Stephs
Much was made leading up to the series about the fact that Warriors superstar guard Steph Curry has never be named NBA Finals MVP. He started out Game 1 like a man on a mission to make that happen.
Curry finished with a game-high 34 points, tying his career best for an NBA Finals game. However, it was the way he arrived at that total which really emphasized how this game got away from Golden State.

In the first quarter, Curry scored 21 of Golden State’s 32 points. Curry hit six 3-pointers in the opening 12 minutes.
Then the magic disappeared. Curry failed to score a single point in the second quarter and was good for just 13 points in the second half.
Boston’s Smothering Defense
For all of elite talent that’s come through the Celtics roster over the decades, when Boston wins NBA titles it’s usually because of a top-to-bottom of the roster buy into the team concept.
That style of traditional Celtics basketball was evident in Game 1. Jayson Tatum only scored 12 points but he dished out 13 assists. Al Horford set a record for a player in his first NBA Finals game by nailing six 3-pointers among his 26 points.

Mostly, though, it was Boston’s determination and commitment to defense that changed an outcome seemingly going Golden State’s way for the majority of the night. In the fourth quarter, the Celtics outscored the Warriors 40-16.
Look for Celtics Line to Shorten
The Celtics are one of those teams like the New York Yankees, Toronto Maple Leafs and Green Bay Packers that own a fan base which never wavers in their belief that this is their year. Celtics fans will bet the team no matter how bad the odds might seem stacked against them.
Giving their team four points coming off an impressive Game 1 rally, expect the Boston faithful to be pounding down the bets on their green-clad heroes.
the celtics beat the warriors so bad that al horford's kid came in and knocked down six threes. embarrassing https://t.co/8s7jy6Fio5

Then again, giving a coach with the acumen of Golden State’s Steve Kerr an extra day between games to gameplan should have sharps backing the Warriors. The Warriors were unbeaten at home prior to Game 1. Is it likely that they’ll lose two in a row at the Chase Center?
Still, the sheer weight of the volume of public betting that will be rushing to get action on Boston should shorten the spread on the Celtics.
