French Open Women’s Singles Odds & Expert Picks : Swiatek is the Heavy Favorite

The next major in the tennis world is the 2022 French Open. The main draw of the tournament begins on Sunday, May 22nd until Sunday, May 5th. Qualifying matches are just wrapping up. The second Grand Slam of the year is played on the clay courts at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris, France.

The biggest names missing from this year’s tournament are Ashleigh Barty, who retired earlier this year while at the top of her game, and three-time French Open winner Serena Williams.

In the 126th edition of the tournament 20-year old Iga Swiatek is the heavy favourite to take home the trophy. The World No. 1’s odds are listed at -110, with Simona Halep next with +1100 odds. Safe to say many are expecting Swiatek to win.

2021 champion Barbora Krejcikova is the second seed in the tournament this year, and is entering the tournament with +3500 odds to win.

Is Swiatek the One to Beat?

There’s not a tournament that goes by where Swiatek’s name isn’t mentioned. The World No. 1 has been unstoppable as she is riding a 28-match streak, has won five-straight tournaments, which includes 42 of her last 43 sets.

Is the French Open the tournament that finally hands Swiatek a loss? Well, seeing that it was the 2020 French Open that really put her name on the map, it’s safe to say she’s fairly comfortable and familiar here. It’s very possible she just continues her streak here in Paris.

Krejcikova looks to Defend

Last year, Krejcikova stunned the world and herself when she went on to win it atl at the French Open. Unseeded at the time, the Czech upset a handful of players from start to finish.

This year she was handed the second seed spot, and will open her tournament up against Diane Parry of France. This will be the first meeting against the two, but it’s worth noting that Parry will be playing in as close as it gets to a home crowd for her.

Best Bet

Once again, does it make sense to bet against Swiatek when she’s this big a favorite heading into a tournament? When the next in line is listed at +1100, compared to Swiatek’s -110. Probably not.

There are players that should be able to make a deep run, and maybe even surprise us. It’ll be interesting to see how Halep is playing at the beginning of the tournament. She’s not coming off the best showing at the Italian Open, where she just had a round of 32 showing.

Paula Badosa, Maria Sakkari, and Aryna Sabalenka are three that could also cause trouble as the tournament goes on. All three have had multiple impressive showings at tournaments this year.

Bodosa had a quarterfinal appearance at the 2021 tournament, Sakkari was a semifinalist and lost to eventual champion Krejcikova, and Sabalenka had a third round appearance. Safe to say all three have been able to find a bit of success here, and there’s no reason they can’t do it this year.

But at the end of the day, there’s no going against Swiatek. Not right now, at the level she’s playing at.
