Verstappen in Championship Form

In addition to overcoming the technical problems that plagued both him and his Red Bull Racing teammate over the first three rounds of the season, Max Verstappen has returned to championship form in his past two outings.

Two weeks ago in Miami, the 24-year-old wasted no time overtaking Leclerc and his Ferrari teammate Carlos Sainz, who both started in the front row. Known for occasional emotional outbursts behind the wheel, Verstappen has maintained an uncharacteristically calm demeanor during his two-race win streak, and demonstrated patience in on-track duels.

That newfound maturity should serve him well in Barcelona, where he has reached the podium in six of his past seven appearances, capped by a second-place finish a year ago. However, has taken home the checkered flag just once at this event.

Leclerc Dominates Qualifying, Struggles on Race Day

While Leclerc remains in firm control of first place in the F1 Drivers Standings, his past two performances have failed to inspire confidence that he can maintain that perch over the course of the season. The winner in two of the first three races of the season, Leclerc saw a golden opportunity to extend his lead in the Standings foiled by his own misstep at last month’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, where he fell to sixth place after spinning out late in the race.

Leclerc’s recent struggles are reflected in the F1 Drivers Championship odds, where he now lags behind Verstappen as a +115 second favorite. But while Leclerc has stumbled on race day, he has excelled in qualifying, seizing the pole in three of five races this season, and is a worthy -105 favorite to lead the way in qualifying this weekend.

It has been an uncharacteristically tough season for Hamilton. The seven-time F1 champion has reached the podium just once through the first five rounds, and his future with the Silver Arrows has remained a topic of constant speculation.

Despite those distractions, it is tough to overlook Hamilton’s recent dominance at this race, which he has won in each of the past five years, and finished among the top two on nine occasions. Hamilton is also coming off a respectable sixth-place performance in Miami, but remains a lengthy +2800 bet to win on Sunday.

George Russell has produced much more consistent results in his first season with the Silver Arrows. The 24-year-old Englishman has cracked the top five in each of the first five races of the season, including a season-best third-place performance in Australia, and also sports +2800 odds to earn his first career win.

While Mercedes still has some work to do to close the gap on Red Bull and Ferrari, Russell’s consistency and Hamilton’s spectacular track record makes Mercedes worthy of a value +1300 wager to produce this weekend’s winning driver.
