The Ferrari driver has amassed an impressive 34-point lead atop the Standings after claiming the checkered flag in two of the first three races of the campaign. Max Verstappen remains Leclerc’s closest rival in the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix odds.

The defending champion is pegged as an attractive +180 second-favorite despite being plagued by technical problems that have prevented him from finishing two of this season’s three races to date.

It is quickly becoming a breakthrough campaign for Charles Leclerc, who arrives in Imola atop the F1 Drivers Championship odds and perched as a strengthening -160 favorite to be the first Ferrari pilot to claim the F1 title since Kimi Raikkonen claimed the crown in 2012. In addition to his victories in Bahrain and Australia, Leclerc has started on the pole twice so far this season, and picked up a bonus point for fastest lap in all three races to date.

With the sprint qualifying set to be used this weekend, Leclerc enjoys an added opportunity to pad his lead. Scheduled to be used in three races this season the sprint qualifying system determines the starting grid through the use of mini races on both Friday and Saturday. Points are awarded to the top eight qualifiers, with the driver grabbing pole position earning eight points.

Can Red Bull Overcome Technical Issues

That is good news for the 24-year-old, who has started from the front row in each of this season’s three races and from the second row in last year’s edition of this race. The big challenge for Leclerc will be whether he can keep pace in sprint qualifying with the Max Verstappen, who earned the win at this race a year ago after starting alongside Leclerc.

However, it remains to be seen whether Red Bull have finally addressed the technical problems that have plagued both Verstappen and teammate Sergio Perez through the first three rounds of the campaign. Red Bull were shutout in Round 1 in Bahrain, with both Verstappen and Perez being forced out of the race due to fuel pump issues.

The duo bounced back in Saudi Arabia, with Verstappen earning his first win of the season and “Checo” finishing fourth. But the defending champion once again made an early exit in Melbourne due to a fuel leak and subsequent fire that forced him out of his vehicle. Another technical failure would be catastrophic for Verstappen in his bid to repeat as F1 champion, who currently sits 46 points back of Leclerc. However, Red Bull has established themselves as the team to beat on straightaways. And considering Verstappen’s steady results in qualifying in the three 2021 races that used the sprint format, he offers value as a +170 to lead the way in the sprint.

While the focus remains squarely fixed on Ferrari’s fast start and Red Bull’s woes, McLaren’s recent reversal in fortune should not be overlooked. Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo have made steady progress since both finished out of the points in Bahrain. The duo both advanced to Q3 in Melbourne before finishing fifth and sixth in that race.

Sprint qualifying presents challenges for McLaren, which has struggled to keep pace with the frontrunners. However, Norris offers solid value as a +180 bet to finish top six. And considering Red Bull’s recent struggles, and the decision by Mercedes to forgo upgrades until after this weekend’s race, any missteps by either of those teams could propel Norris onto the podium as a +1200 bet.
