What a week in sports. Playoff races are coming down to the wire in the NBA and NHL, college basketball just crowned a new National Champion, and golf’s elite are getting set for the biggest tournament of the year.

Masters week remains the highlight of the PGA Tour schedule, while Augusta National is still the pinnacle of golf. This week’s tournament is loaded with mouth watering storylines, including the potential return of Tiger Woods.

The Masters is unique for so many reasons, one of which is that it’s the smallest field of any Major Championship. Just over 90 golfers will tee it up on Thursday (April 7) with the top-50 players and ties making it through to the weekend. Another wrinkle is that the field includes a handful of former champions from decades ago, as well as a few amateurs, thus making it a pretty easy cut line to get across.

The Bloom is Off the Rose

One player who looks like a prime candidate to miss the cut is Justin Rose. Yes, his track record over the years at Augusta has been spectacular but he’s looked like a shell of his former self recently.

Rose is fresh off back-to-back missed cuts and didn’t win a single match in his round robin pod last time out at the WGC Dell Match Play. He’s rarely been in contention since finishing seventh at Augusta last year, racking up just as many missed cuts as top-15 finishes (4).

Well this eliminates some very interesting players from the top. SG ARG for the last 3 months:

Of primary concern is his horrendous recent ball striking. He’s lost strokes in that department in three straight measured events, losing 4 strokes on approach at the Players and 5.6 strokes with his irons two starts prior. Another key indicator for success at the Masters is around the green play and Rose has seemingly lost his touch in that department as well. He’s now failed to gain strokes on and around the green in three consecutive starts.

Bryson In Bad Health

By his own admission Bryson DeChambeau is operating at about 80% health right now. The 2020 U.S. Open winner is dealing with hand and hip injuries and is reportedly ignoring his doctor’s advice and playing this week anyways.

DeChambeau returned to competitive golf at the WGC Dell Match Play and struggled failing to win a match. He then showed up at the Valero Texas Open last week and was abysmal. DeChambeau missed the cut by six strokes losing 2.5 strokes both off the tee and around the green, and another 1.1 strokes on approach.

With his 2022 Masters odds as long as +4500, clearly his game and his health are not in a good place making him a price candidate to trunk slam on Friday.

Make the Cut Parlay

That’s enough doom and gloom for one article, now let’s focus on who will still be playing on the weekend. Joaquin Niemann was highlighted in the Masters sleepers and longshots for good reason. He’s played exceptionally well at tough courses this season, winning at Riviera, placing sixth at Torrey Pines and 22nd at TPC Sawgrass.

Niemann is playing the best golf of his life and after making the cut last year at Augusta is a solid anchor for our make the cut parlay. Following Niemann, let’s target Corey Conners. The Canadian has back-to-back T10’s at the Masters, and is three-for-three in made cuts.

Next, let’s add Sam Burns. The 25-year-old debutant is one of the hottest golfers on the planet, winning last time out at the Valspar after finishing ninth at the Players.

Sprinkle in some Tony Finau, who’s four-for-four in made cuts at the Masters with three top-10’s, and add in 2018 champ Patrick Reed who also has back-to-back top-10s at Augusta and finally showed life at the Players.

We’ll round it out with Robert Macintyre, who finished 12th in his Masters debut, and has made the cut in all seven of his Major Championship appearances. Add it all up and we’re looking at a +658 payday if they all make it through to the weekend.
