The semi-finals are set for the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play with two past champions in Dustin Johnson and Kevin Kisner remaining. The other two in the final-four are Scottie Scheffler, who has won twice this season and lost in the final here last year, along with Canadian Corey Conners. Fifth ranked Scheffler will take on eighth seeded DJ in the one semi-final duel, while #29 Kisner squares off against #36 Conners.

At the start of the championship, Johnson and Scheffler were in the top-five most likely to win by oddsmakers, while the Kisner/Conners duo had much longer odds in the +5000 range.

Big Names Bowing Out

Just like the case in the round robin play of this event, where big names like Justin Thomas and Viktor Hovland bowed out, the sweet-sixteen and elite-eight matches saw titans of the sport falling by the wayside.

World number one Jon Rahm lost in 19 holes to Brooks Koepka, who in turn fell to DJ in the afternoon. Two-time major champion Collin Morikawa got waxed in the morning by Abraham Ancer 7&6, who then wasn’t able to defeat Corey Conners.

Dustin Johnson Vs Scottie Scheffler In Epic Match

When Dustin Johnson is on his game, it’s very hard to find a better player in golf. He hasn’t played a ton in 2022, and hasn’t had a top-five finish anywhere in the world in over a year, yet the 2017 champ is in fine form. After winning that year, Johnson hasn’t made it out of the group stage in three tries, but he’s won all five matches thus far.

Scottie Scheffler used his finals loss to Billy Horschel at this tournament last year to spring board him, as he’s won twice in 2022 and should he win this championship, he’ll ascend to number one in the world.

If Scheffler wins tomorrow's championship match and moves to no. 1 in the world, he would be the first player to get his first major tour win + reach the top spot in the same year.

Scheffler won Saturday morning against Billy Horschel to avenge his loss to him in 2021, then took down Seamus Power in dramatic fashion in the afternoon.

Both players have the exact same -110 line to win their match, and it would be a shock if whoever won wasn’t the favorite for the final. It’s a close one to call, but taking Scheffler’s form that’s seen him win twice in four starts, plus be a finalist last year, gives him the slight edge.

Kevin Kisner Thrives At This Course

Before this tournament began, we were all over Kevin Kisner to come out on top simply because of his dominance at Austin Country Club. He won the event in 2019 after making it all the way to the final in 2018. With his clean sweep thus far, he’s now 21-6-1 at the WGC-Dell Match Play since 2016.

Kevin Kisner now 5-0-0 for the week, advances to the semifinals for the 3rd time since 2018.

His combatant will be Corey Conners, who has been known as a premium ball striker for the last few years on tour. After losing all three matches in his debut in 2021, he’s been fantastic this go around. His afternoon tilt was the only time this week he’s had to play the 18th hole.

Oddsmakers still see him as the least likely to be crowned champion, which makes sense given the luminaries he’s up against, and that he’s only won once on the PGA Tour (2019 Valero Texas Open).

Kisner has been counted out many times before, like he surely was when he was three down with four to play in the sweet-sixteen match to Adam Scott. All he did was come roaring back by snagging the final four holes. His winning pedigree and amazing play might be too much for the unheralded Canadian.
