The PGA Tour’s crown jewel is upon us at famed TPC Sawgrass for the Players Championship. Defending champion Justin Thomas and world number one Jon Rahm head up the list of favorites in the 2022 Players Championship odds. Anybody could take home the trophy come Sunday evening with 46 of the top 50 golfers in the world competing.

The public is backing two-time major champion Collin Morikawa the most, followed by four-time major winner Brooks Koepka and Jordan Spieth. Read on to see the betting trends for the Players Championship.

Public Backing Collin Morikawa

There’s little doubt as to why bettors are favoring Collin Morikawa this week, as he’s coming off a runner-up finish at Riviera. He’s already snagged two major titles and is number two in the world as well. What he lacks, however, is experience at this quirky diabolical course, with last year’s T-41 result his first ever Players Championship.

Though he obviously has the game to win anywhere, as evidenced by his Open Championship title in his first try last season, experience is paramount at this track and at +1600, it’s not overly enticing.

Brooks Koepka has two career top-20’s at this venue, and three starts ago he was T-3rd at the WM Phoenix Open. His +3000 number is much more attractive than Morikawa’s as it’s nearly double the odds.

Since Jordan Spieth held the 54-hole lead here in 2014 (settled for T-4th), he’s been miserable at Sawgrass, with four missed cuts along with T-41 and T-48 finishes. It’s fairly surprising the third most handle has been placed on him this week at +4000.

Sharp Money Is on Rahm & Berger

World #1 Jon Rahm has had two straight solid results at Sawgrass, placing T-9 and T-12. His recent issue, however, has been on the greens, where he’s lost strokes in three straight events to the tune of nearly nine combined shots. He’s 137th in his last twelve rounds in SG: putting.

He was the 54-hole leader at the Players in 2019, and if anyone can rebound, it’s him, and his +1400 price is better than it has been for weeks.

Daniel Berger is coming off a blown five shot lead at the Honda Classic in his last tournament. He’s mixed in two respectable top-10’s at Sawgrass to go along with four poor tournaments in his career. Against this stacked field, +3000 isn’t overly exciting.

Public Also Favors Morikawa to Grab Early Lead

It stands to reason that the majority of people would back Collin Morikawa to jump out in front in the Players Championship first round leader odds, considering they’re betting him to take the championship. Nearly 10% of the handle is on him to shoot the low first round score. He’s tenth in first round scoring average, with +2500 odds that are just juicy enough to sprinkle on.

The next two golfers in terms of handle are Daniel Berger and Scottie Scheffler. Berger had a commanding lead at the Honda in his last start before a poor Sunday, but as mentioned, his track record is too spotty here to fully trust.

Scheffler, meanwhile, has won two of his last three tournaments (also a T-7), is first in total strokes gained the last twelve rounds, and is sixth in birdie average, making him a very intriguing option at +2800.

Other Good Value Plays

Among the top-ten golfers on the board, Brooks Koepka sticks out at +5500, particularly if you’re also selecting him to emerge victorious.

Gary Woodland and his +7000 ticket is just too good to ignore, as he’s been T-5th in his last two events. He’s gained eleven strokes tee-to-green for those two weeks, and over nine shots on his competitors on the dance floor.

Finally, Canadian Corey Conners at +6500, who is drawing nearly three percent of the handle, is enticing. He was solo seventh here last year, is coming off a T-11 at Bay Hill, is fourth in greens in regulation and fifth in SG: off-the-tee on the campaign.
