Nobody on the PGA Tour is as hot as Scottie Scheffler is now, as he’s coming off the Arnold Palmer Invitational title. That was his second title in his last three events, having also nabbed the WM Phoenix Open.
He enters the diabolical Pete Dye designed TPC Sawgrass with a ton of confidence, and he’ll need it, with 47 of the top 50 players in the world teeing it up. The only three not playing this week are Bryson DeChambeau, Phil Mickelson and Harris English. The defending champion is Justin Thomas, and he’s tied with Jon Rahm for the shortest odds to taste success come Sunday evening. 2019 champion Rory McIlroy and Collin Morikawa round out the top-four on the board.
Predicting a champion at this treacherous layout is very difficult. Rarely do the same players produce great results year-in and year-out at this quirky venue, which is the PGA Tour’s crown jewel. The final three holes produce drama and theatre, with water hazards ready to swallow up errant shots, most notably at the famed, island green par-3, 17th hole.

Hideki Matsuyama Plays Sawgrass Well
Reigning Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama has backed up his Green Jacket with a great season, having already won the ZOZO Championship and Sony Open titles. He comes in to this prestigious tournament with a lot of confidence, with four Top 20’s in six starts in 2022.
Before COVID-19 halted the tournament in 2020 after 18 holes, Matsuyama had rushed out to the first round lead. Though that event didn’t count, Matsuyama has posted five career top-25’s at Sawgrass, including a T-7th in 2016 and a T-8th in 2019.
Subsequently, his strokes gained stats in the last 24 rounds at this course have been solid.
Hideki Matsuyama’s Strokes Gained Last 24 Rounds at TPC Sawgrass
Ball Striking | Approach | Tee-To-Green | Total | Off-The-Tee |
---|---|---|---|---|
2 | 2 | 5 | 7 | 13 |
In the last 24 rounds on the PGA Tour this season, he’s first in total strokes gained and eighth tee-to-green. With +2500 odds, you’re getting him at longer odds than the top-seven golfers on the board. That’s significant, given that he’s just one of two players (Scottie Scheffler) with multiple victories this season.

2022 Players Championship Best Value Picks
- Brooks Koepka (+5000): All Brooks Koepka does is show up in big tournaments to win hardware, as evidenced by his four major championships. Given that, at +5000, Koepka has to be something of a bargain. Just three starts ago he was T-3rd at the WM Phoenix Open, and the last time he teed it up at the difficult Honda Classic, he was T-16th. He’s putted well here in the past, ranking seventh in strokes gained in that category the last 24 rounds at this track.
- Billy Horschel (+5500): Billy Horschel came oh-so-close to nabbing the title at the API, ending up as the runner-up despite holding the 54-hole co-lead. For the championship, he was fifth in strokes gained: approaching the green, which will be critical for success at Sawgrass. He’s had a brilliant stretch of four straight events with T-2nd, T-6th, T-11th, T-16th showings. Tenth in SG: putting and 15th in total strokes gained for the campaign.
- Gary Woodland (+8000): The 2019 US Open champion has seen a return to form, as he’s posted back-to-back T-5th finishes. Last weekend was particularly crushing, as he held at the lead on the 71st tee before an untimely double bogey-bogey finish sunk his chances. Gained over six shots on the field tee-to-green at the Honda and over six shots putting at Bay Hill. Of note, if you shop around, Sergio Garcia can also be found at these odds, and he’s had five career top-5’s at the Players Championship, including the title in 2008.
