With the best PGA Tour golfers teeing it up at this week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational, the rest of the players are headed to the Puerto Rico Open. Low scoring is essential for success at the Grand Reserve Country Club, with all but one of the 13 times this championship has been held seeing a double-digits under-par winning score.

The favorite to take the title is Austrian Matthias Schwab, who is fresh off a T-7th showing at the Honda Classic. He saw fellow countrymen Sepp Straka become the first golfer from their country to win on the PGA Tour, and he has the chops to make it back-to-back. Mark Hubbard and John Huh, who also posted strong showings at PGA National, are the two golfers favored behind Schwab.

The Puerto Rico Open is a totally wide open event that can see a variety of golfers take the title against inferior competition. The opposite field event at Bay Hill also has some intriguing sleepers and longshot picks to taste victory come Sunday evening.

Kurt Kitayama Contended at Honda Classic

Golf is arguably the most fickle sport, and Kurt Kitayama’s recent performance would suggest that. The two-time DP World Tour champ had missed five straight cuts heading into last week’s Honda Classic. Given his recent poor play, a quick missed cut at one of the toughest tracks on Tour seemed to be in order.

Instead, all Kitayama did was take the first round lead en-route to a third place showing, where he was in contention all through the back nine.

Had he not had that strong appearance out of nowhere, he wouldn’t have even been considered a strong contender this week. In his lone start in Puerto Rico in 2017, Kitayama was respectable, tying for 17th. His +2800 odds to win outright are longer than the top-five golfers on the board, so you can get him with some value.

2. Rafael Campos (+10000): Rafael Campos will have the backing of the local supporters behind him this week in his native homeland. In three of his last four Puerto Rico Open’s, he’s posted a top-10 result. That was highlighted by a T-3rd last year, where he was in the hunt through the back nine on Sunday. 15th in SG: off-the-tee in last 24 rounds.
3. Ted Potter Jr. (+12500): Ted Potter Jr. is one of those classic names that pops up on leaderboards from time-to-time, but has no consistency. He’s been able to taste success twice on the big stage, at the 2012 Greenbrier and 2018 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He’s made all four cuts lifetime at this championship, and in the last two years, the crafty lefty has gone T-6th and T-7th.
