One week after winning the prestigious Genesis Invitational in wire-to-wire fashion, Joaquin Niemann is back at it, competing at the Honda Classic. He, along with Daniel Berger are tied for the second favorites behind 2020 champion Sungjae Im.
Coming off such great fields at the WM Phoenix Open and the Genesis Invitational, the Honda Classic unfortunately sees a dip in the depth for this championship. Just three of the top-20 golfers in the world (Brooks Koepka, Louis Oosthuizen, Niemann) are playing after the top-eleven all played just outside of Los Angeles.
This marks the start of the four-tournament swing through Florida, and it’s a very challenging track. In the last ten Honda Classics at PGA National, no champion has shot better than twelve-under-par. Holes 15-17 are infamously known as “The Bear Trap” with plenty of golfers dreams of winning vanquished as they’ve found the difficult water hazards on three diabolical holes.

Tommy Fleetwood Victory Long Overdue
It’s extremely hard to believe that Tommy Fleetwood hasn’t had a worldwide title since 2019, especially because he’s been playing some really solid golf for quite a while. He hasn’t missed a cut in his last 18 starts, and has been inside the top-15 in seven of his last ten events. Included in that have been four top-10’s, with his most recent tournament being a T-8th at the Saudi International.
He’s also been oh-so-close to claiming his first title stateside at the Honda Classic, finishing fourth in 2018, then holding the 54-hole lead in 2020 before settling for a third place showing.
Unsurprisingly, his strokes gained stats in the last eight rounds at PGA National have been outstanding.

Tommy Fleetwood’s Strokes Gained Last Eight Rounds at PGA National
Total | Tee-To-Green | Ball Striking | Off-The-Tee | Approach | Around-The-Green | Short Game | Putting |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 1 | 1 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 8 | 30 |
He comes in at +2000 on the board, with longer odds than the top-three golfers. Ideally, if it were a deeper field you’d be able to get him at longer odds than this. Given his strong play plus comfort at this difficult track, Fleetwood might be able to make it four first-time winners in the last five weeks on the PGA Tour.

2022 Honda Classic Best Value Picks
- Cameron Tringale (+3100): Three of the last four tournaments have seen first-time winners break through, and like Tommy Fleetwood, Cameron Tringale looks to keep that trend alive after four runner-ups in his career. He’s been quite inconsistent, with four fantastic finishes (T-2nd, T-3rd, T-7th, T-13th) in his last seven tourneys, to go along with three missed cuts. Seventh in total strokes gained in last twelve rounds at PGA National.
- Keith Mitchell (+3400): Keith Mitchell has tasted success at this venue, claiming the 2019 for his first PGA Tour victory. He’s also been playing some really solid golf of late, placing inside the top-12 in three of his last four starts. In his last 24 rounds, he’s second in SG: off-the-tee, third tee-to-green and fourth in total strokes gained.
- Brendan Steele (+7000): Brendan Steele is very comfortable on this golf course, having placed in the top-15 on five of the last six occasions. Most notably, the last two years he’s gone T-3rd and T-4th. He does come in with some poor form in 2022, which is a cautionary tale, however. Shop around if you’re inclined to wager on Steele, because he’s as high as +14000 on other sports books.
