A star-studded leaderboard at the Waste Management Phoenix Open sees a PGA Tour rookie leading the field through 54 holes.
Sahith Theegala, in the tournament on a sponsor’s exemption, bounced back after a rocky start Saturday and holds a one shot edge over two-time (and defending) champion of this event, Brooks Koepka.
There’s a ton of star power ready to pounce should the youngster stumble, including Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay, who are just two behind.
Coming into the week, Theegala was nowhere near the top of the betting board to get his first career victory. Jon Rahm was the favorite, and he finds himself lurking, as he’s part of a big group of players who are six back of top spot.
Known as the most raucous tournament in golf, specifically the wild par-3, 16th hole, moving day did not disappoint with plenty of fireworks.
Read on to see the updated odds and the best bets heading into Sunday’s final round.

The shot heard round the sporting world came courtesy of Sam Ryder, who made the first ace on the 16th hole since Francesco Molinari in 2015. The ace turned the frenzied crowd into a tizzy.

Cantlay Within Striking Distance
Heading into the championship, we were high on Patrick Cantlay to take the title considering his recent phenomenal form. He hasn’t disappointed, heading into yet another final round with a chance to win, like he’s been doing his last five tournaments (two wins).

For the week, Cantlay, who has three top-10’s in three tourneys in 2022, is first in strokes gained putting. He’s picked up nearly seven strokes on the dance floor over his competitors through 54 holes. If not for a sloppy bogey on the final hole Saturday, he would be just a shot behind.
Even though Theegala has been an amazing story to take the lead, it’s hard to trust a golfer playing in just his 24th PGA Tour event, especially with such a stacked group chasing him. Having the 54-hole lead isn’t foreign to him, however, as he held a one shot edge at this season’s Sanderson Farms Championship, before fading on Sunday to a T-8th result.
Trusting a seasoned veteran like Cantlay would seem to be the smarter play, and at +600 odds, you’re getting him at reasonable enough value.
2022 Waste Management Phoenix Open Best Live Value Picks
- Hideki Matsuyama (+1100): Hideki Matsuyama has already won twice this season, at the Zozo Championship and the Sony Open. He’s also tasted victory twice at this golf course, in 2016 and 2017. He enters the final day just three behind after posting four birdies in his final six holes.
- Adam Hadwin (+3500): When searching for some really good value, Adam Hadwin stands out at this price, considering he’s just three behind. The 2017 Valspar Championship winner hit 16 of 18 greens on moving day as he took the lead for a brief time. He’s made just three bogeys through three rounds.
