After two weeks in Hawaii, the PGA Tour returns to the mainland for The American Express, the event formerly known as the Bob Hope Classic. It will be played over three courses, with each track being used once the first three days, which then leads to the cut. The final round is contested at PGA West, and the celebrity pro-am portion has been reinstated after there wasn’t one last year.
World #1 Jon Rahm, who won this tournament in 2018, is back – and he’s the +500 favorite. He’s played this event for the first time since his sixth place showing in his title defense in 2019. Patrick Cantlay, who nearly had an epic Sunday comeback last year, is the second favorite to claim victory.
Going low is imperative for success, with 14 straight champions firing at least 20-under-par en route to the title.

Matthew Wolff Has Started Season on Fire
In his first four tournaments to start the campaign late last year, Matthew Wolff was playing some inspired golf. The results spoke for themselves, as he went T-17th, 2nd, T-5th and T-11th to get his season off to a wonderful start.
Subsequently, his strokes gained stats in the last twelve rounds are phenomenal as he’s been knocking on the door for another title.
Matthew Wolff’s Strokes Gained Stats In Last 12 Rounds
Short Game | Total | Around The Green | Tee-To-Green | Putting | Ball Striking | Off-The-Tee |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 2 | 3 | 6 | 7 | 27 | 31 |
After bursting onto the scene to win the 3M Open in just his third professional start, Wolff hasn’t been able to add to his trophy haul but has found himself with plenty of other chances to get it done. With his strong start to the season, his +2800 odds are awfully intriguing to get back into the winner’s circle.
Last Five The American Express Winners
Year | Winner |

2018 | Jon Rahm |
2017 | Hudson Swafford |
2022 The American Express Best Value Picks
- Will Zalatoris (+5000): Though he hasn’t been as strong the last four times teeing it up as we’ve been accustomed to seeing, the 2021 Masters runner-up sports intriguing odds at this price. He’s not that far removed from a four event stretch that saw him post three top-15 finishes.
- Adam Hadwin (+6500): From 2016-19 Adam Hadwin was dominant at this championship and did pretty much everything but win it. He was T-6th in 2016, then the following three years the Canadian was second, T-3rd, then T-2nd.
- Andrew Landry (+13000): The ultimate boom or bust pick for this tournament. In the last four attempts, he’s had two middling events but two spectacular ones in La Quinta. He won it in 2020 and was also a runner-up, dropping to Jon Rahm in a playoff in 2018.
