The long wait for online New York sports betting is almost over, as nine sportsbooks have been awarded mobile wagering licenses.
Some notable brands were left out and did not receive licenses from the New York State Gaming Commission. Applicants like Jay-Z, Penn National Gaming (Barstool Sportsbook and theScore Bet), and Fanatics were not given coveted sports betting licenses.
Online sports betting is closer than ever in New York, as mobile wagering is set to launch before Super Bowl LVI on February 13, 2022.
Big Names That Did Not Receive Online Sports Betting Licenses in New York
While household names like DraftKings and FanDuel were granted online sports betting licenses, there were some big applicants that failed to secure NY market access. Multiple sportsbooks and interested parties formed groups during the bidding process to make their applications stronger.
Applicants who were shut out of New York:
-Penn National (Barstool)
-Fanatics Sportsbook
-Bet 365
-theScore
-FOX BetBet 365 was the only applicant that made the final round to not be selected for a license.

Here are the groups and individual sportsbooks who failed to secure online NY sports betting licenses:
- Jay-Z, Fanatics, Penn National Gaming (Barstool and theScore)
- Bet365
- FOX Bet
These interested parties theoretically could receive licenses at some point in the future, however it’s almost certain they won’t be ready for day one of online NY sports betting.
Nine Sportsbooks Are Awarded Online NY Sports Betting Licenses
On the flip side, there were a total of nine sportsbooks who successfully applied for online sports betting licenses in the Empire State. The successful applicants have all received 10-year licenses, and they will each pay a whopping 51% tax rate to the state of New York.
The nine online sportsbooks who received mobile NY sports betting licenses are:
- FanDuel
- DraftKings
- BetMGM
- Caesars Sportsbook
- WynnBet
- PointsBet
- Bally Bet
- Kambi / Rush Street Interactive
- Empire Resort
These sportsbooks are all expected to be available as soon as online NY sports betting is made available to the public. The launch of online New York sports betting is expected sometime before Super Bowl LVI in February 2022.
With nine sportsbooks forking over 51% of their profits to the state, New York sports betting revenue is expected to hit billion-dollar figures year after year.
New York Online Sports Betting Expected to Launch Before Super Bowl LVI
The New York State Gaming Commission has long been targeting an online sports betting launch date before the next Super Bowl, and with mobile wagering licenses now awarded, it looks like they’re going to hit their target.
Kambi, in partnership with Rush Street Interactive, plans to go live on "day one" of New York online sports betting, the company announced in a statement. State regulators are still finalizing approvals, but books can go live once cleared; launch expected before Super Bowl.
