Panthers, Leafs Gaining Traction
Florida and Toronto are two teams gaining major traction in the 2022 Stanley Cup odds entering NHL preseason. The Panthers have improved from +2200 to +1800 since the NHL Draft, while the Leafs have gone from +1400 to +900. Both teams lost in Round 1 of the 2021 Playoffs.

The Panthers are a popular preseason Stanley Cup bet due to their stellar offseason. Florida added forwards Sam Reinhart and Joe Thornton and will have a fully healthy Aaron Ekblad. The Leafs, meanwhile, brought in Nick Ritchie to help replace Zach Hyman. The star power of Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner always makes Toronto an attractive Cup bet.
One reason these teams are rising is because a previous top-five contender has taken a nosedive. The Carolina Hurricanes have fallen from +1200 to +2500 following a tumultuous offseason. The Canes lost blueliner Dougie Hamilton and Calder finalist goalie Alex Nedeljkovic. Signing Jesperi Kotkaniemi to an offer sheet didn’t improve their fortunes.
Rangers Are Intriguing Longshot
The New York Rangers are one team worth monitoring. The team has been steadily rising in the odds after opening at +2500. They’re now listed at +2200 entering NHL preseason. What makes the Rangers intriguing is the fact the Metropolitan Division is fairly wide open and doesn’t feature a clear favorite.

The Rangers have the reigning Norris Trophy winner in Adam Fox, two budding superstars in Alexis Lafreniere and Kaapo Kakko and elite forwards in Artemi Panarin and Mika Zibanejad. This team is going to be contending soon; it’s just a matter of when. The Rangers missed the playoffs by 11 points last season and haven’t qualified since 2017.
The Panthers are my top longshot Cup bet heading into NHL preseason, but the Rangers are worth sprinkling on. They added some grit this offseason, bringing in guys like Ryan Reaves, Sammy Blais and Barclay Goodrow. Those additions could come in handy during a postseason run. If Igor Shesterkin lives up to the hype and K’Andre Miller continues to develop, the Rangers could make some noise in 2021-22.
Canucks, Blues Have Something to Prove
There are several teams with something to prove heading into NHL preseason, including the Vancouver Canucks (+6000) and St. Louis Blues (+5000). Both teams are priced as extreme longshots but could see improvement in the coming weeks. The Canucks are coming off a last-place finish in the North Division, while the Blues are coming off a first-round sweep at the hands of Colorado.

The Canucks will need to prove that last season was an outlier and they are more reminiscent of the team that impressed in the 2020 Return To Play. Vancouver made some big moves this offseason to make a bounce-back season realistic, including acquiring Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Conor Garland from Arizona. The Pacific Division doesn’t feature many contenders, which opens the door for the Canucks.
The Blues are also looking to bounce back after an embarrassing playoff showing against Colorado. The Blues have disappointed since winning the Stanley Cup in 2019, but they still have a core capable of contending. St. Louis has some promising prospects and added Brandon Saad and Pavel Buucnivich this offseason. They’ll look to return to form in a Central Division that features only one elite contender (Colorado).
