The quarterfinals of women’s tennis at the Olympics will be played tonight, July 27th, starting at 10:00 pm EST. Badosa and Vondrousova will be competing in one of the quarterfinal matches being played. Neither player has competed at the Olympic Games before, making this new territory for both.

Badosa will be entering the match coming off an impressive straight set win over Nadia Podoroska. Vondrousova, on the other hand is coming off what some may say was the biggest win of her career so far, as she defeated Naomi Osaka, who was the hometown and heavy favorite to win gold.

Badosa Defeats Podoroska

After losing the first set of her first round match to Kristina Mladenovic, Badosa has been on a tear in Tokyo, now having won six sets in a row in the three rounds she’s played at the Olympics.

After a second round upset, defeating Iga Swiatek 6-3, 7(7)-6(4), Bodosa entered her third round match with a lot of confidence, and it showed.

The 23-year old Spaniard went on to win 6-2, 6-3 to earn a spot in the quarterfinals, and become one step closer to winning a medal.

Vondrousova Defeats Osaka

Vondrousova was dealt a tough draw that saw her playing Osaka, the heavy favorite to win gold at the Olympics as early as the third round. And that’s just what happened.  But she found herself stunning the superstar, winning 6-1, 6-4.

Not only was this a tough match to head into, but Vondrousova had never played Osaka before. But she came out ready to play, and took an early 4-0 lead. Osaka was able to fight back in the opening game of the second set where she broke Vondrousova, but again the 22-year old Czech was able to break Osaka another two times to eventually win.

Osaka recorded a startling 18 unforced errors, while Vondrousova managed only six. The unseeded player was also able to win 14 of 16 first service points while recording 10 winners on the way to her quarterfinal win.

Head-to-Head

Badosa leads the head-to-head record over Vondrousova 1-0, after capturing the win during their only meeting that happened earlier this year. The two played each other in the Round of 16 at the French Open, where it took three sets for Badosa to win the match.

Vondrousova hasn’t had the most impressive year, only recording a 14/12 record heading into the Olympics, while Badosa has found success with a 26/10 record, while capturing a title at the Serbia Open in May.

Vondrousova is coming off if not the biggest, one of her biggest wins in her career, defeating Osaka. But she hasn’t been completely lights out in the Olympics. She could very well be just heating up at the right now.

Badosa on the other hand, has been a bit more consistent, especially heading into The Games.

Like every other tournament, we’ve seen player have huge wins over tough opponents, and they aren’t always able to come back down and continue to dominate the tournament. The first few games of this quarterfinal match will be a huge indication of who will be able to win and move onto the semifinals. Both players have a lot of strengths on their side. At this point, it could be either players’ match. Badosa has been the more consistent of the two players, but Vondrousova is competing at such a high level right now. Either way, I would expect it to go the distance, despite who wins the match.
