Hamilton Under Pressure at British Grand Prix
With both his season and long-time grasp of the F1 title slipping away, Lewis Hamilton is under enormous pressure as the Formula 1 circuit shifts to Silverstone this weekend. The 36-year-old is coming off another disappointment two weeks ago in Austria, where he was forced to settle for fourth place, marking the third time he has failed to reach the podium during his current five-race swoon.
Being back at Silverstone this weekend should feel like home for Sir Lewis Hamilton, who has the most wins at the circuit (7)🏆

Now trailing Verstappen in the F1 Drivers Championship odds, Hamilton finds himself in the unfamiliar role as the underdog on his home track, where he has claimed seven career wins, and 11 total podium finishes. He has also captured the pole in five of his past seven appearances at Silverstone, including last year’s British Grand Prix. That is a feat he will likely have to accomplish once again this year if he is to challenge Verstappen, who is coming off a spectacular wire-to-wire win in Austria. But once again, Hamilton trails Verstappen as a +175 bet to take the top spot in qualifying.
Bottas Key to Mercedes’ Success
Considering Verstappen’s recent form, is there any value in Hamilton’s odds? The short answer is some. Few drivers know Silverstone as intimately as Hamilton, and it remains unwise to ever count out the seven-time world champion. However, the Englishman will likely need a little help from both the racing gods and teammate Valtteri Bottas to end his current slide. A change in the weather forecast would also help. It is currently expected to be a hot day on Sunday, with temperatures reaching into the high 20 degrees Celsius. Such conditions have not worked in favor of Mercedes, who have struggled with tire trouble this season.

The upside for Mercedes is the steady track record of Valtteri Bottas on this track. The 31-year-old Finn has finished among the top four in four of his past five appearances at Silverstone and also has reached the podium on four occasions over the past decade. While Bottas has endured a season of fits and starts, he is coming off back-to-back podium performances in Austria and offers value as a -135 bet to finish among the top three this time around.

Leclerc Poised to Spoil Norris’ Homecoming
Of course, it is important to keep in mind that Hamilton is not alone in claiming the British Grand Prix as his home race. Born in Bristol, England, Lando Norris would like nothing better than to claim his first career F1 victory in front of British fans. The 21-year-old is off to a sensational start to the 2021 campaign. Norris is the only driver this season to earn points in all nine races to date and has cracked the top five on eight occasions.

McLaren’s ongoing battle with Ferrari for third place in the F1 Constructors Standings has influenced Norris’ race strategy this season. There have been occasions this season when Norris has been in contention for a podium but yielded to his Mercedes and Red Bull rivals as part of a team strategy to contend with Ferrari. However, he displayed his ability to compete with the frontrunners in Austria, where he engaged in a lengthy duel with Hamilton on his way to a third-place finish.

After battling for the win at the previous race in Austria, Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc went head-to-head yet again in an epic scrap at Silverstone in 2019.#OTD #Verstappen#Leclerc #BritishGP 🇬🇧pic.twitter.com/I2zzkQvsEQ— R™ (@FormuIaMax) July 14, 2021
However, the better value lies in wagering on Norris’ Ferrari rival Charles Leclerc, who enjoys more experience and success at Silverstone, and should be jumped on as a solid -135 bet to finish among the top six.
The Picks: Valtteri Bottas top three (-135); Charles Leclerc top six (-135)
