Wimbledon is back after being cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic, and most of the top players are eager and excited. No surprise here that Novak Djokovic leads the odds to win the tournament outright, as he’s having an incredible 2021 season, and is coming off an impressive win at the French Open, as he attempts to complete the Calendar Golden Slam.

Djokovic Attempting the Calendar Golden Slam

The 34-year old has been having himself an impressive 2021 season. He captured both the Australian Open and French Open titles, and just recently confirmed that he will be participating in the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, making the Calendar Golden Slam a possibility. Djokovic will also technically be defending his title here in Wimbledon that he won in 2019, as the tournament didn’t take place last year.

And his relatively straightforward draw makes it an even higher possibility that he captures the title here.

He’ll open his tournament up against 19-year old Jack Draper. Draper is coming off some big wins over Jannik Sinner and Alexander Bublik, and found success in junior Wimbledon, but he shouldn’t pose much of a threat to the Serb. It’s most likely that Djokovic won’t really be challenged until the quarterfinal, but even then, he’s never loss to Sinner or Andrey Rublev, which are two players he might see down the line.

Djokovic looks to have a straightforward path to winning his sixth Wimbledon title.

Can Federer Continue to Comeback?

Roger Federer was awarded the sixth seed for the tournament, but in his section of the draw, he’s definitely the one who could make the biggest splash. The 39-year old has won the title a record number eight times, with his last win in 2017, and was most recently the runner up in 2019.

The Swiss is someone you can’t count out at Wimbledon, and with +1000 odds, he’s not so far down the line, that it seems impossible. He is still coming back after multiple knee injuries, and has been slow to get back to the level of play we’re used to. It’s worth remembering that to win the tournament, you have to be able to get through two weeks of best-of-five matches.

Can Federer keep up with that?

He opens his tournament up against Adrian Mannarino, and that will be the greatest indication of what the rest of the tournament can look like for the 39-year old. If he struggles at all, I don’t think he’ll be able to get out of his quarter. But he is one of the best, so you can never count him out completely.

Dark Horses & Best Bets

Like I said, the early rounds of a Grand Slam always provide opportunity for crazy unexpected upsets.

One of the best first round matchups that you’ll want to check out will be Nick Kyrgios vs Ugo Humbert. This will be a rematch of their five-set battle at the Australian Open earlier this year. Whoever comes out of this match, has the opportunity to make a splash in London and upset some other players.

Someone else to keep an eye on is Matteo Berrettini. The seventh seed has had a pretty stellar couple of month leading up to Wimbledon, and is entering the tournament coming off a title win at the Queen’s Club Championship.
