2021 US Open 2nd Round Odds, Preview and Picks

The first round of the US Open was delayed 90 minutes due to fog in the morning, pushing tee times back and ensuring that not everyone would complete their rounds on Thursday. When golf was halted due to darkness, Russell Henley and Louis Oosthuizen found themselves tied for the lead at four-under-par. The latter still has two holes remaining to complete his first round.

Tournament favorite Jon Rahm shot a solid 2-under, 69, as did Brooks Koepka, and they find themselves just two strokes behind and subsequently are the top-two betting favorites to lift the trophy come Sunday. Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama and Xander Schauffele are tied with them, with four-time major winner Rory McIlroy just a shot behind the quartet.

Koepka Continues Major Run

At this point in his career absolutely nobody should be surprised to see Brooks Koepka competing to win a major championship despite a missed cut in his previous event.

He performed well on day one, hitting 13 greens in regulation and shooting 2-under-par. The two-time US Open champ wasn’t as sharp on his back nine after a sweet front nine of 3-under-par, but he was able to grind his way to a good score.

This tournament has been kind to Koepka in the past, as he’s won two of the last three times he’s played and finished runner-up in 2019, which is why we were so high on him to begin the week.

Brooks Koepka’s Best US Open Finishes

Something changes in Koepka once he gets to a major championship that gives him immense focus, which few players have. After a beautiful opening round, there’s zero reason to suggest that he won’t be in the mix come Sunday afternoon.

He sports the second shortest odds to win the event at +700, which shouldn’t be a surprise, and given his sparkling record at the national championship, there’s no reason to doubt the four-time major champion.

2021 US Open Best Live Value Picks

1. Dustin Johnson (+1800): After a prolonged stretch where the world #1 struggled (by his lofty standards) with no top-10’s in seven starts, he was right in the thick of things last weekend at the Palmetto Championship before a late triple bogey knocked him out of it. He had to settle for a T-10 result, but it showed that DJ was back to contending, and he’s just four back after 16 pars, one birdie and one bogey. Johnson will benefit from the easier conditions early Friday morning as well.
2. Patrick Reed (+3300): This year’s Farmers Insurance Open champion at Torrey Pines is professionally lurking just five strokes back. He was very steady Thursday, which will be handy the next three days, with 15 pars, one birdie and two bogeys. The 2018 Masters champ has been very consistent in the majors, placing inside the top-20 in the last six grand slam events.
