International tournaments, especially the Euros, are a great place for players to mark their presence on the European football scene. While winning Euro 2020 is the most significant achievement, being the best player puts you on another level. This year, the Euro 2020 tournament is seeping with young talent with the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Phil Foden, and Kai Havertz all looking to put in strong summers. However, with more than a handful of players in the prime of their careers, winning Player of the Tournament at Euro 2020 will be no small task.
Historically, UEFA has only handed this award out six different times. Since 1996, the names on the list include: Matthias Sammer, Zinedine Zidane, Theodoros Zagorakis, Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Antoine Griezmann. To note, five of six of these players were on the winning team at their respective Euro tournament. The only player not to win the Euros in this list was Griezmann, who also won the Golden Boot in 2016, scoring six goals. With that being said, it is important to think about what teams have the best chance at winning the Euro 2020 competition, when making this prediction.

Additionally, Griezmann is the exception once again as he is the only Golden Boot winner to also win Player of the Tournament. In turn, do not expect the Golden Boot winner to also win this award despite the impact they might have. Instead, it might be a creator or a midfielder that really controls things on both sides of the pitch.
Why Kylian Mbappe Won’t Win Player of the Tournament
First, it is important to preface this by saying that Mbappe is one of the top three players in the world right now. His pace and finishing is simply world class, and his performances will be imperative to France’s success in this competition. As Karim Benzema looks like he will have to sit out Euro 2020 due to injury, fans will look towards the young attacker for goals. However, do not expect him to win Player of the Tournament.

As stated previously, the Golden Boot winner in most cases does not win the award. Actually, most of the time the Player of the Tournament ends up going to a midfielder. It is in my belief that France do have the best odds to go on and win Euro 2020 as they have the best depth and experience. Regardless, Mbappe has one teammate specifically that is better suited for this award.
This Is N’Golo Kante’s Trophy to Lose
If a trophy was ever perfectly lined up for a player, it is now with N’Golo Kante. The Chelsea midfielder has been incredible over the past couple of seasons since his World Cup win with France in 2018. As France has to play Germany and Portugal in the group stages, some of these games could be true midfield battles. This favors Kante’s chances of winning Player of the Tournament, especially on the back end of winning the Champions League.
N’Golo Kante to win the Ballon d'Or? 🏆

Kante won Man of the Match in the Champions League Final and was immense to Chelsea’s European run. It is for these reasons that he is in conversations to also win this year’s Ballon d’Or.

Regardless, there are a couple of other dark horses in the mix to win Player of the Tournament. If Belgium makes a run at the Euro 2020 trophy, then Kevin De Bruyne is an obvious favorite to lift the award. Meanwhile, do not discount Jack Grealish as a favorite for England. The Aston Villa midfield is a tremendous creator and would walk into most teams across Europe.
Euro 2020 Player of the Tournament Best Bet
Overall, the best bet for this award is N’Golo Kante with odds of +1100. This bet is more valuable than just picking Mbappe, and is honestly the more realistic choice.
Pick: N’Golo Kante (+1100)
