Daniel Kaluuya’s Award to Lose

For anyone who needs a primer into the enigma that is Daniel Kaluuya, his jaw-dropping role in Judas And The Black Messiah is a hell of a place to start. The role sent Kaluuya over the edge into A-lister territory, but is it enough to land him an Oscar?

According to the odds, Kaluuya is the main (and sole) contender for Best Supporting Actor. The 93rd Academy Awards odds show Kaluuya as the clear favorite. In March, when nominations were first announced, at least the race was close. But Kaluuya’s average odds across multiple sportsbooks have shortened from -475 to -2500 now.

While Paul Raci turned out a great performance in Sound of Metal and other actors like Sacha Baron Cohen and Leslie Odom Jr. brought their A-game to their respective roles, Kaluuya’s magnetism onscreen is unmatchable.

Wow, what a difference a month makes. Opening odds showed an extremely competitive race for Best Supporting Actress. Initially, Youn Yuh-jung and Maria Bakalova opened with almost identical average odds of +188 and +175, respectively. But things have changed.

Now, Bakalova’s odds have tripped a bit, down to +375, while competitor Yuh-jung’s have decreased to -500. Could it be that Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, the film Bakalova is nominated for, has grown a bit stale on viewers (and thus, voters)? Potentially.

What’s more likely is that Minari, starring Yuh-jung, was a bit of a sleeper hit. It opened to much less fanfare when it was released. But over the past month, Minari has picked up a lot of steam, thanks in part to Yuh-jung’s striking performance.

Can the Oscars Turn a Corner?

But hold the phone. The Oscars–like all awards shows– have been thrown under the bus a lot in recent years for seeming out of touch. And while the Borat franchise typically has none of the prestige associated with the Oscars, awarding Bakalova’s irreverent and poignant performance would be a good indicator that the Academy is ready to step into the current social state.

The rest of the nominees are essentially seat fillers at this point. As much of a disservice as that feels to say about the legendary Glenn Close, it’s sadly true. Unfortunately for this Hollywood icon, this eighth nomination is likely to be her eighth nomination without a single win to date.
