- The favored Colorado Avalanche saw their Stanley Cup odds shorten from +400 to +350 following the conclusion of the Monday, April 12th NHL trade deadline
- The Toronto Maple Leafs saw no movement in their odds, staying steady at +800
- Despite adding three new pieces, the betting line on the New York Islanders lengthened from +1200 to +1300
The teams that were atop the odds board leading up to the NHL trade deadline are still the teams to beat as the clock ticked past 3 PM EST on Monday and the dealing was done. The Colorado Avalanche are the +350 favorites in the 2021 Stanley Cup odds. Entering the day Monday, Colorado was listed as the +400 chalk to win it all. The Boston Bruins made a big move to acquire Taylor Hall and Curtis Lazar from the Sabres, shortening their Stanley Cup odds from +2000 to +1700.
Several of the other top Cup contenders were also busy adding pieces leading up to the deadline. Those making moves included the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vegas Golden Knights, Washington Capitals, New York Islanders, and Tampa Bay Lightning.

Avalanche Make Tweaks
Currently the #1 team in the NHL standings, there wasn’t much that the Avalanche needed to do to get better. They improved their depth via a trio of moves.
Colorado Avalanche NHL Trade Deadline Additions
Player | Position |
---|---|
Carl Soderberg | Center |
Patrik Nemeth | Defense |
Devan Dubnyk | Goaltender |
Goalie Devan Dubnyk gives them coverage for #1 Philipp Grubauer. For both defenseman Patrik Nemeth and forward Carl Soderberg, it’s their second tour of duty in the Mile High City, so fitting in won’t be an issue.

Soderberg scored 23 goals for the Avs in 2018-19 and will offer secondary scoring from a bottom-six forward role. Nemeth adds a physical edge to the Avalanche back end.
Colorado was the team to beat when the sun came up on Monday. The Avalanche remained that team as the sun set on the NHL trade deadline.
Leafs Loading Up
Toronto GM Kyle Dubas was a busy man leading up to the deadline, as he continues to reshape his team to find a path past the first round of the playoffs, something the Maple Leafs haven’t achieved since the spring of 2004.
Toronto Maple Leafs NHL Trade Deadline Additions
Player | Position |
---|---|
Nick Foligno | Left Wing |
Ben Hutton | Defense |
David Rittich | Goaltender |
Stefan Noesen | Right Wing |
Columbus Blue Jackets captain Nick Foligno will slot into the second forward line, while Riley Nash, also from Columbus, is projecting as Toronto’s new third-line center. David Rittich gives them goaltending coverage behind Jack Campbell if #1 netminder Frederik Andersen is unable to return from injury. Ben Hutton figures to be the #7 defenseman for the Leafs.

It’s been an ongoing rebuild for Dubas since last season’s early playoff exit. Forward Joe Thornton and defensemen TJ Brodie and Zach Bogosian were offseason acquisitions. Alex Galchenyuk was acquired earlier in the campaign. He’s been slotted in alongside Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner on Toronto’s top line.
There’s no question that Dubas has done some impressive work. The concern is whether Toronto can get all these moving pieces to mesh and find the necessary chemistry in time for the playoffs.
No Love For Islanders
Two years ago, they were the NHL’s best defensive team. Last season, they were Eastern Conference finalists.
Prior to the deadline, the Islanders made the most significant move, shoring up their scoring potency with the addition of forwards Kyle Palmieri and Travis Zajac from the New Jersey Devils. Defensive depth was solidified by picking up veteran defenseman Braydon Coburn from the Ottawa Senators.

This is a club that is relentless and has completely bought into the defensive system designed by coach Barry Trotz.
New York Islanders Trade Deadline Additions
Player | Position |
---|---|
Travis Zajac | Center |
Braydon Coburn | Defense |
Kyle Palmieri | Right Wing |
If you’re seeking a Stanley Cup sleeper to play, the Islanders are that team. The Islanders’ Stanley Cup odds lengthened to +1300 after the NHL Trade Deadline at DraftKings, but are listed at +1100 at FanDuel.
Capital Adjustments
For a team that’s just three years removed from their reign as Stanley Cup champions, the Washington Capitals have flown under the radar this season. Tied with the Islanders for top spot in the East Division, the Caps made some late moves Monday that were interesting.
Washington Capitals Trade Deadline Additions
Player | Position |
---|---|
Anthony Mantha | Right Wing |
Michael Raffl | Left Wing |
Well, that’s one adjective to describe it. Puzzling is another. Adding Anthony Mantha from Detroit, they picked up a guy who’s built like a power forward but seldom plays like one. Mantha is capable of taking over a game when the mood strikes him.

Washington also added depth forward Michael Raffl from division rivals the Philadelphia Flyers. What the Caps didn’t do was move their Stanley cup needle with the oddsmakers. Washington was listed at +1500 to win the Stanley Cup.
