Through 18 holes, 2013 US Open champion Justin Rose led the Masters by four strokes after a brilliant opening round. He was leaking a lot of oil on the first nine Friday where he shot three over par and was losing his grip on the lead. However, Rose played the second nine in three under par to shoot even par, which was good enough for a slim one stroke lead through two days.

Some big names in golf failed to make the cut, with defending champion Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy and Brooks Koepka packing their bags after a disappointing championship.

Coming into the week, we were bullish on Rose’s chances given his astronomically high +10000 odds to win outright because of his tremendous career record at Augusta National. Jordan Spieth, one of the favorites entering the event is just two shots back of Rose and the current betting favorite.

Rose Clinging To Lead Over Established Major Champs

Even though Justin Rose is two ahead of 2015 winner Jordan Spieth and three in front of 2017 PGA Champion Justin Thomas, he finds himself with the third shortest odds to win the tournament. He stalled in round two, preventing him from maintaining his strong edge, but he battled back to remain in front.

He actually hit two more greens Friday compared to Thursday, though he’s still struggled on the first nine. Through two days, he’s 2-over-par on the first nine holes and nine-under-par on the second nine. If he continues that trend, his +550 odds might climb up midway through Saturday, which might be the perfect time to grab him at more value than he has now.

At this point, Spieth, the 2015 champ who has a pair of runner-ups and a third place showing in his career at this championship, would still have to be considered the favorite to win another green jacket.

2. Marc Leishman (+2000): Two shots back after a strong 5-under, 67 on Friday. Ten birdies through two rounds, and has started three under through four holes in each of the first two days, which could bode well for a fast start Saturday. He’s had five career top-10’s in majors, including a T-4 and ninth place at the Masters and a playoff loss at the 2015 Open Championship.
