21-year old Canadian, Denis Shapovalov looks to continue his impressive start at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships as he takes on France’s Jeremy Chardy in the quarterfinals on Friday. The match is set to take place at 7 AM EST.

The third seed and World No. 12 entered the tournament within the top 10 best odds to win outright with +1600. But his opponent, unseeded Chardy, wasn’t mentioned within the top 15.

Shapovalov is entering the match as the heavy favorite, and has spent significantly less time on the court than Chardy in the tournament so far. Could fatigue be a possible factor in this match?

Shapovalov’s Smooth Sailing

Having been awarded the third seed, the Canadian received a first-round bye, resulting in having only two matches under his belt in the tournament, heading into the quarterfinals. The lefty has yet to drop a set, and has only lost 11 games.

In his Round of 16 match, Shapovalov needed just over an hour to defeat his opponent, Hubert Hurkacz of Poland, winning 6-4, 6-3. Hurkacz was an opponent that heading into the match had always been a challenge for Shapovalov. Prior to this win, Hurkacz held a 2-0 head-to-head record against the young Canadian.

But it was Shapovalov’s serve that was the major difference in this match, resulting in five aces, as well as winning 90% of his first serves. In contrast to Hurkacz only winning 57% of his. On top of his strong serving throughout, Shapovalov also managed to record 26 winners in his first victory against Hurkacz.

In his Round of 32 match, his serving was just as impressive, winning 80% of his first serves. This has been a massive improvement in his game, and he’s starting to see the benefits of this improvement with these wins.

Chardy’s Continues to Upset

34-year old Chardy is bound to enter this quarterfinal match a bit tired. The Frenchman is coming off a just over two and a half hour match against Russian Karen Khachanov, where he won 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-4. It’s worth noting that all three of Chardy’s matches this tournament have gone the distance.

But his past two opponent, Khachanov and Alex De Minaur were seeded in the top 10, and despite the matches going three sets, he did come from behind after losing the first set, to upset them both.

Chardy recorded 19 aces to Khachanov 12 in the long match earlier today. Along with those 19 aces came five double faults.

Chardy has already reached two ATP Tour semifinals this year, at the Antalya Open and the Murray River Open. But he’ll look to make it three semifinals, as well as three wins against players seeded in the top 10, when he takes on Shapovalov.

Head-to-Head

Shapovalov and Chardy have only played each other twice before, both matches happening in 2018, and Shapovalov winning on both occasions.

Best Bet

Shapovalov has started to find consistency in his game under coach and former top 10 player Mikhail Youzhny. His first serve accuracy and power has increased tremendously, adding such an asset to his game.

In his previous match he was also able to record 30 receiving points won to his opponent’s 11. And in the match before, he recorded 21 to his opponent’s 11. These major margins and winning serve percentages are allowing him to win these matches, and I don’t see that changing against Chardy.

Chardy is a fairly strong player from the baseline, being able to move across easily and has both a strong forehand and backhand. But I don’t think the Frenchman will be able to keep up with the Canadian. He’ll have to really focus on his returns, as we know Shapovalov serving has been so strong.

But I don’t think it’s going to be close, and Shapovalov should be able to secure this win fairly easily.
