The NBA All-Star Game MVP odds look awfully familiar. That might be because of the comparison with the NBA MVP odds. Once again, it is LeBron James and Joel Embiid atop the pile.

Just as with the regular season award, Steph Curry lingers at a tantalizing price, and Giannis Antetokounmpo is in the mix, although well behind the favorites.

Winning an All-Star Game MVP is not a test of durability, though. It is not a comparable challenge to winning regular season MVP. With that in mind – who’s the best bet to win the award this weekend?

King James Chases Record

Only two players have won All-Star Game MVP more than LeBron James. Bob Pettit won the award twice with the St. Louis Hawks, and Kobe Bryant (who the award is now named after) won it four times. LeBron is looking to make history again this weekend, and become the third player in NBA history to win four All-Star Game MVPs.

James’ regular season MVP candidacy has taken a hit of late. He took his first night off of the season this week. Perhaps that was a chance to preserve some energy ahead of a big showing in the All-Star Game.

Perhaps it’s a sign James isn’t too fussed about this game, an event he criticized taking place a few weeks ago.

The desire to surpass Michael Jordan’s legacy is public knowledge, but how bothered will LeBron be by the All-Star Game MVP award?

Having won the award in 2018, and been at the center of a dramatic game last season, James is clearly still invested in the All-Star Game. Whether that’s enough to justify such a short price is questionable, though.

Kawhi Defends His MVP

Although barely in the regular season MVP conversation, Kawhi Leonard comes into the All-Star Game defending his crown. With the Elam Ending introduced last year, Kawhi stood out on his way to 30 points.

Defense was played in an All-Star Game like never before. Leonard excelled at both ends.

The Clippers might have crumbled in the playoffs last season, but Leonard is still among the top few players you’d take in a one-off game. He’s not as flashy as some others, yet he’ll put up points deliver in clutch moments as the teams chase down the target score.

At +800, Leonard is a great bet to win another All-Star Game MVP. He would become only the 15th player in NBA history to win the award more than once.

Bigs Put Up Numbers

Joel Embiid and Giannis Antetokounmpo put up 22, and 25, respectively, last year. A few days rest might have been preferred from their respective front offices, but the Eastern Conference stars will be determined to put on a show.

Embiid was fully engaged with the Elam Ending in 2020, and we can expect that competitive streak to come out again at the weekend. No one is going to get in the way of a euro-stepping Antetokounmpo in an exhibition game, are they?

There won’t be a barrage of double teams and suffocating defense. If Embiid fancies it, he can put up huge numbers. The same goes for the Greek Freak.

Outsiders to Consider

His minutes might be carefully limited, but it’s impossible to ignore Zion Williamson at that price. He’s hardly going to be running pick-and-roll like he has with the Pels, though Williamson is well worth a small wager at +3300.

With lob passers all over the floor, and no one risking their body to stop his drives and dunks, this is the perfect platform for Williamson to put on a show. Unlike some of his veteran colleagues, he will be particularly keen to make a mark in his first All-Star appearance.

The same can be said of Zach LaVine, who could produce some mind-bending in-game dunks.
