While 48 of the 50 golfers in the world are teeing it up at the WGC-Workday Championship at the Concession, the PGA Tour offers those who didn’t qualify a chance for a title at the Puerto Rico Open. This tournament has been a springboard for golfers to earn their first victory, with six of the last seven champions making the Puerto Rico Open their maiden triumph.
At #55 in the official world golf rankings, Matt Wallace is the highest ranked player competing, and he’s a part of a trio of players who are tied for the second shortest odds to walk away with the trophy. Four-time European Tour champion Thomas Pieters is searching for his first win on the PGA Tour, and he’s the favorite to take home the title.
Last year, Viktor Hovland earned his first championship in dramatic fashion, but he won’t be playing as he’s competing at the WGC-Workday Championship, leaving this field completely wide open.

Ollie Schniederjans Due for Breakthrough Victory
Former world number one ranked amateur Ollie Schniederjans seemed destined for stardom when he broke out onto the PGA Tour in 2017 – and he’s had a few close calls to earn that first title – though it hasn’t happened yet.
His best chance was the 2017 Wyndham Championship, where he was a runner-up, and he’s also finished third three times, most recently at the Bermuda Championship. He’s coming off a solid T-14 result in his 2021 debut on the Korn Ferry Tour, where he was first in strokes gained putting last season.

The man with the sweet head of hair posted five top ten finishes on the KFT last year, and with a great event at the Bermuda Championship under his belt this season already, could be primed for that breakthrough. His +3500 odds are enticing this week where there are no slam dunk picks to be made.

Puerto Rico Open Best Value Picks
- Taylor Pendrith (+3500): Second on the Korn Ferry Tour points list last season, Taylor Pendrith was dynamite, racking up four runner-up finishes, including three in a row. Had a very respectable US Open in September, where he was T-23rd. Sixth in driving distance and birdie average last season.
- Josh Teater (+5500): Veteran Josh Teater is searching for his first win, and it very nearly came last year at this event. He was the runner-up to Viktor Hovland after a crushing lengthy birdie putt on the 72nd hole. Posted four rounds in the 60’s. Though he hasn’t had high finishes in his last three tournaments, he’s played the weekend in all of them.
- Scott Brown (+9000): The 2013 champion of this tournament has a great track record around this course, posting five top-10 finishes. Extremely streaky player that is coming off a decent T-30 showing at Pebble Beach two weeks ago.
