The 2020 League of Legends World Championships are down to eight and the quarterfinals begin on October 15th. According to the LoL World Championship odds, Top Esports and DAMWON Gaming are massive favorites to win, and that’s reflected by their quarterfinal odds.

The European Underdogs

Although North America didn’t get a single team through to the round of 8, Europe saw two of their teams qualify for the quarterfinals. Both G2 and Fnatic have survived the group stage and now find themselves as underdogs moving forward.

For G2 Esports, their road is a bit more familiar as just last year they beat a couple of Korean teams in DAMWON and SKT to make it all the way to the finals.

It’s completely possible that G2 once again makes it there but they’ll have to overcome Gen.G and a much improved DAMWON. Their first opponent is Gen.G who finished the group stage with a dominant 5-1 record and are now slight favorites to defeat G2. The one loss, however, that Gen.G had was to European squad Fnatic.

Europe has struggled at Worlds against teams from China, but they’ve been able to have success against Korean squads. G2 Esports is also a stronger team than Fnatic with a ton of best of 5 experience and success. They always have some strange team compositions and strategies at their disposal, so at worst, they won’t go down quietly. I’d take G2 here in the hopes that they can put together another deep run at Worlds.

Fnatic, unfortunately, doesn’t inspire the same amount of confidence. They’re a very strong team but they’re tasked with taking down one of the tournament favorites in Top Esports.

At the given odds, putting a bet on Fnatic is very tempting since there’s not much value to be had on Top Esports. Fnatic was able to take a game off of the third seed out of the LPL in LGD so it will be closer than a lot of people think. At the end of the day, neither bet is very appealing in this one.

China vs. China

Unfortunately for the three Chinese teams remaining in the tournament, they’ve all been placed on the same side of the bracket. Instead of a potential China vs. China grand finals, they’ll be fighting each other for one available finals spot. In the quarterfinals, Suning and JD Gaming will duke it out and although they’re two of the top three teams from China, they haven’t played against each other that often. The one time they played in the summer season, JD Gaming won 2-0.

Aside from that, JD Gaming faired much better against China’s top team Top Esports. JD Gaming forced a game 5 in the LPL Summer finals while Suning fell 3-0 to Top in the semifinals.

Suning was an entertaining team and showed more promise than JD Gaming in the group stage. Despite that, JDG has shown more ability in the best of fives and should be able to come up with a win over Suning.
