The Sanderson Farms Championship tees off Thursday with ten former major champions teeing it up, including Louis Oosthuizen, Henrik Stenson, Zach Johnson and Sergio Garcia. The field competing isn’t an elite list of golfers with just five of the top 50 in the world descending upon the Country Club of Jackson in Mississippi.
First-time PGA Tour winners have been commonplace since this event moved to the current course, with all six champions making the Sanderson Farms Championship their maiden PGA Tour victory, including Sebastian Munoz who won in a playoff last year.
With this tournament being friendly for first-timers, in this article we’ll explore some players who could breakthrough on the biggest stage this week.

Scottie Scheffler Looking for Breakthrough Victory
Entering the week as the outright favorite at +1000, Scottie Scheffler has been playing some great golf, putting together six straight top-22 finishes.
He also has top five results at the PGA Championship and two playoff events in the Northern Trust and Tour Championship.
Scottie Scheffler returns to the PGA TOUR at Sanderson Farms after missing the U.S. Open due to Covid-19.

The 2020 PGA Tour rookie of the year was derailed by a COVID-19 positive test, forcing him to miss the US Open. It’s been three weeks since the diagnosis and he should be able to pick up right where he left off, though the break stalled a strong stretch of golf.
Scheffler had six top-5 finishes in his maiden season on the tour, and was tenth in strokes gained off the tee during the 2019-20 campaign. Though signs point to him breaking through at some point soon, it’s hard to go all-in on a player who’s never won before at the relatively short +1000 odds.

Sanderson Farms Championship Best Value Picks
- Sam Burns (+2900): He’s been knocking on the door for that first victory, as he was one shot back after 54 holes two events ago at the Safeway Open. Since the tour restart, has made seven of ten cuts with nothing worse than 32nd when he’s made the weekend. Has had success on this track, finishing T-3rd in 2018.
- Carlos Ortiz (+5000): Hasn’t had much to show in 2020, but in the two years Ortiz has played this event he’s been money, nearly winning both times. In 2018, he tied for third and in 2019 he was T-4th.
- Kristoffer Ventura (+8000): Becoming a mainstay around leaderboards, as he’s gained shots on the field in ten of his last eleven tournaments. Two events ago at the Safeway Open, was one back after 54 holes, like Burns, before finishing T-7th. Made six of last seven cuts, with four top-25 results.
