Packers Down A Wideout

The Packers find themselves shorthanded at wide receiver after veteran Devin Funchess decided to opt out of the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Green Bay signed free agent Funchess, 26, to a one-year contract worth $1.2 million base salary, with $1 million in signing bonuses.

Last season, Funchess signed with the Indianapolis Colts. However, injuries cost him all but one game of the 2019 campaign and he caught just three passes.

Three-time Pro Bowl selection Davante Adams headlines the Green Bay receiving corps. After him, though, it’s a fairly pedestrian group. He was the only Packers wideout with 50 catches or 500 yards last season.

Other returness include Allen Lazard, Jake Kumerow and Marquez Valdes-Scantling. In 2019, Lazard snared 35 passes, including three TDs. Valdes-Scantling caught 26 balls with two TDS. Kumerow made 12 catches, one for a TD.

Back in the fold after a year on the injured list is 2018 sixth-round draft pick Equanimeous St. Brown. He caught 21 passes as a rookie in 2018.

Malik Taylor, Darrius Shepherd and Kabion Ento spent 2019 on Green Bay’s practice squad. Reggie Begelton and Darnell Stewart Jr. are college free-agent signings.

Tepid Interest In Brown

Despite the loss of Funchess, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst expressed confidence in his receiving group. He didn’t sound like someone with interest in Brown.

“I wouldn’t say we’re any more active than we ever have been in looking for help at any position,” Gutekunst said in a Zoom session with reporters on Sunday.

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll appears more interested in Josh Gordon, another troubled wide receiver, than he does Brown. At the same time, Carroll didn’t rule out Brown as an option.

Early last month, Brown posted photos of himself on Instagram working out with and catching passes from Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson. “Who would like to see this on Sundays?” Brown asked.

As might as Brady and Brown are pals, there doesn’t seem to be a fit in Tampa Bay. The Bucs bring back two 1,000-yard wideouts in Chris Godwin and Mike Evans.

Seattle makes sense. With the recent addition of All-Pro safety Jamal Adams, the Seahawks are going all-in to win the Super Bowl this season. Why not roll the dice on a impact player like Brown?

Will Brown Play A Down?

The NFL recently announced that Brown would be suspended eight games this season for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. Brown indicated he wouldn’t appeal the suspension. However, that might not be the end of his problems.

The NFL is also investigating a civil suit launched against Brown which includes allegations of sexual assault and rape of a former trainer. The league could opt for additional punishment, dependent upon the outcome of the suit.

However, these legal matters are unlikely to be settled prior to the conclusion of 2020. That would open a window of opportunity for Brown to jump through and on to an NFL roster.
