Elise Mertens
World No. 17, Elise Mertens is still fighting her way through the 2020 Aussie Open, competing in both the singles and the doubles tournament. In the first and second round of the singles tournament, she’s dominated her way through. She beat her first opponent, Danka Kovinic 6-2, 6-0, and her second opponent, Heather Watson, 6-3, 6-0.

In her first round match, she was able to convert five out of six breakpoints, and win 30 service points. She held her opponent to only 11 receiving points won, and never allowed her to win two or more games in a row.

In Mertens’ second round match against Heather Watson, she was able to dominate again. The two faced each other once again, after seeing each other just a week prior at the Hobart quarterfinals where Watson won. Mertens was able to take advantage of the lack of energy and intensity Watson had, converting six out of eight breakpoints, and serving up four aces.
Aussie Open Women’s Singles 3rd Quarter Odds
Player | Odds |
---|---|
Simona Halep | +120 |
Belinda Bencic | +500 |
Elise Mertens | +700 |
Donna Vekic | +750 |
Yulia Putintseva | +1000 |
Odds taken Jan 23, 2020
Elise Mertens’ odds to win the 3rd Quarter have also shortened to +700. She’s in the quarter with Belinda Bencic and 2018 Australian finalist, Simona Halep. Halep hasn’t had quite the dominating first and second round matches that Elise Mertens has, but her odds are significantly shorter than Mertens in the 3rd Quarter and to win the Open.
Best Bet
It seems that as Mertens continues to win, her odds will reflect that. But everyone in the tournament is still playing incredible tennis. The top two favorites to win the tournament, Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka have yet to drop a set. As the rounds go on, it will be interesting to see if Mertens hangs on. But right now, she’s not the best bet to win the Aussie Open outright.
