As we work our way through the off week for Super Bowl LIV (the Pro Bowl is on Sunday), we’ve been sifting through the vast array of player props on the board. Just ask any fantasy football player and they’ll tell you: the San Francisco 49ers backfield has been a muddied situation for the last couple of seasons. This year, three players had between 123-137 carries; last year, four different players spent time as the lead dog on the team.

As of right now, Raheem Mostert is the team’s top running back as he’s coming off the best game of his career. Mostert racked up 220 rushing yards and four touchdowns against the Green Bay Packers. He had a whopping 29 carries in that game, which was by far the most he’s ever had in a game (previous high was 19).

Mostert has now had at least double-digit carries for seven straight games as he’s taking over the team’s lead rushing role, wresting the job away from both Tevin Coleman and Matt Breida. Mostert is likely to see at least double-digit carries again in the Super Bowl, which begs the question if the broadcast will mention his back story.

Mostert Was Undrafted, Bounced Around

Mostert has actually been in the NFL since 2015 but a number of teams didn’t see the potential in him. He had a cup of coffee with the Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Ravens, Miami Dolphins, San Francisco 49ers and Chicago Bears before coming back to the 49ers for a second tour.

He’s set all sorts of career-highs this year with games played (16), attempts (137), rushing yards (772) and touchdowns (8), and is a key cog on the offense, helping the 49ers get to where they are.

Will the Broadcast Mention Mostert’s Background?

The Super Bowl is typically much more than just a game as the broadcasters like to tell the story of how the teams got there and highlight the best from-nothing-to-something stories. Mostert is one of the best in that regard as he was undrafted and nobody wanted him; now he’s the starting runner on a team playing in the Super Bowl.

Furthermore, this fact is brought up almost anytime Mostert has a halfway decent performance. It might take one or two good carries before the broadcast mentions it. At +200, this seems like good value as this looks like something that’s very likely to happen.
