Here’s the case for why I think MacKinnon has the inside track at winning his first Hart Trophy.
MacKinnon Dominant Across the Board
The Avalanche superstar leads the league with 1.52 points per game this season, yes better than the Edmonton Oilers dynamic duo of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. He ranks fourth with 25 goals and fourth with 39 assists, while his 64 total points sits third in the league. Pick a stat and you’ll find MacKinnon at or near the top of it.
Four points tonight. 62 points this season. This puck possession.
All signs indicate that Nathan MacKinnon (@Mackinnon9) is VERY, VERY good at hockey. pic.twitter.com/2OADh1TQRR

The bigger key? He’s racking up these gaudy numbers for an elite team in Colorado. The Avalanche are 25-13-4 this season which is second best in the Western Conference. They have scored 32 more goals than their opponents which is the best mark in the league. If Colorado keeps up its dominant play, and there’s little to suggest they won’t, voters will be looking to reward the teams best player for a dominant campaign.
Matthews Looks Energized With New Head Coach
The Toronto Maple Leafs fired head coach Mike Babcock earlier this season. They had won only nine of 23 games and things had seemingly gone off the rails. Enter new bench boss Sheldon Keefe and all of a sudden the tides have turned. Auston Matthews in particular seems to have benefited. His ice-time is up and he’s making the most of it. Since Babcock’s firing he has 14 goals in 20 games which is tied for best in the league.

The team is also dominating. They are 15-4-1 since the switch from Babcock to Keefe. If the Maple Leafs are able to continue their charge up the standings and Matthews wins the Rocket Richard trophy for most goals (he’s currently second behind Boston Bruins forward David Pastrnak) he most certainly could be in the MVP conversation.
Expect MacKinnon & Matthews to be Nominated
Two elite superstars playing for great teams making a charge up the standings, it’s a recipe that works well come awards season. The fact you can place a value bet on each if you spread your wagers across two books is good news for you, take advantage before their continued success on the ice moves the odds and diminishes your potential return.
PICK: MacKinnon (+235) and Matthews (+1600)
