Sunny Edwards vs Marcel Braithwaite will see two British bruisers vie for some UK hardware at the Copper Box in London, England, this Saturday (Dec. 21, 3:00 PM ET). The vacant BBBofC super flyweight championship is up for grabs. Braithwaite exits the club show circuit for the bright lights that accompany fighting arguably one of the hottest domestic fighters on the UK scene.

The 23-year-old Edwards is a heavy favorite to win the vacant belt.

This looks to be one of the most lopsided bits of matchmaking that I have seen in my time covering boxing for SBD. Braithwaite has never defeated a boxer with a winning record. The lone loss he has is to a pugilist with a record of 10-48-5. I have a base level of respect for every boxer that gets in the ring, but it’s farcical that this man is getting a title shot of any sort, especially against an unbeaten champion with the kind of profile that Sunny Edwards has.

I see Edwards putting on a clinic come Saturday.

Edwards Stays Unbeaten

Edwards might be running low on mantle space with all of the belts he has acquired so far. “Showtime” has captured the WBO European, WBO International, and IBF International titles as a super flyweight. Also, he won the IBF International and WBO Intercontinental belts in his last fight after a brief foray into the flyweight division.

All of this in 13 career fights.

Edwards returns to super flyweight for this December bout. With all of these belts in his possession, it seems like Edwards will invariably take that next step up sooner than later.

There’s a bit of a backstory between these two. They were both members of Team England at one point. They shared rooms, supported each other, and were by all accounts friends. That is until Braithwaite unfollowed Edwards on Instagram, per Showtime‘s recollection. Since then, the two have not had kind words about each other.

Braithwaite has zero KOs in nine victories. This largely removes the idea of “the puncher’s chance” as there is no proven track record of Braithwaite having knockout power. This isn’t to say Edwards is much of a knockout artist either as he sits at a sub-33 percent KO rate. Edwards, instead, relies on a style that has been described as slick. He is defensively savvy and offensively calculated, which translates into a high fight IQ and great ringcraft/generalship.

Though Braithwaite admittedly did capture the BBBofC English super flyweight title, he’s facing a totally different animal in this outing. It’s relatively easy for me to call a winner here. The true question becomes how and when does it happen? Though the odds aren’t quite as slanted in Edwards’ favor as compared to past fights, I still see Edwards winning this one with style points.

Edwards should eventually win a lopsided unanimous decision victory.
