- Will the Atlanta Falcons have a new head coach in 2020?
- Josh McDaniels is favored to be coaching the team next year in the latest NFL prop
- Who’s the best bet?
Dan Quinn is currently the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, but with the team struggling to a 1-3 record out of the gate, there is rampant speculation that Quinn will be fired sooner rather than later.
Now sportsbooks have released odds on who will be coaching the team at the start of the 2020 season.
Falcons Head Coach in Week 1 of 2020 Season
Coach | Odds |
---|---|
Josh McDaniels | +350 |
Matt Eberflus | +400 |
Jim Harbaugh | +500 |
Norv Turner | +500 |
Mike Munchak | +500 |
Greg Roman | +700 |
Jay Gruden | +700 |
Jack Del Rio | +1000 |
All odds taken 10/02/19.
The fine-print on this prop wager states that Atlanta must have a new head coach in Week 1 of 2020 season or all bets will be graded “no action” (i.e. all bets will be refunded).
Is McDaniels a Deserving Favorite?
The early betting favorite is Josh McDaniels, longtime New England OC. He has been on the top of many teams’ list for next head coach but has stayed with the New England Patriots. After he accepted and then reneged on the Colts job two years ago, many believe he is staying with the Patriots in order to take over when Bill Belichick finally leaves.
He signed a five-year contract extension to stay on as the Pats’ offensive coordinator in Sep. 2018

“I’m thrilled he’s still with us and is going to continue in his role,” Belichick said, via ESPN.com. “I think he’s a top offensive coordinator in the league. He’s done a great job for me for a long time in a lot of different roles. I’m very glad, based on the meeting we had — there were a number of things that happened — that we were able to work that out and keep him with us.”
Right now, the smart money is not on McDaniels leaving New England anytime soon.
Would Matt Eberflus Make Sense for Falcons?
After McDaniels in the odds comes Indianapolis Colts’ defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus.
Eberflus has helped several teams with their defenses, like the Dallas Cowboys and Colts, and Atlanta is in dire need of defensive improvement. While Quinn came with a solid defensive pedigree, his vision on that side of the ball is not working out.

But Eberflus is not strictly a defensive mind. In Dallas, he was also the passing game coordinator, which just adds to his resume as a head-coaching candidate. Eberflus is a sensible mix of defensive prowess and offensive familiarity.
Pick: Matt Eberflus (+400)
