- Nathan’s Famous annual hot dog eating contest returns this Independence Day
- This uniquely American tradition has occurred each year since 1916
- The live event is hosted at Nathan’s Hot Dogs in Coney Island and will be broadcast on ESPN2
God bless America. Nothing says “I love my country” more than shoving dozens and dozens of tubes of meat down one’s throat. At least that’s what Nathan’s Famous Corporation, a hot dog restaurant in Coney Island, believes.
Since 1916, the former mom and pop hot dog stand and now cultural institution has been hosting its annual hot dog eating contest every July 4th. With Independence Day right around the corner, it’s time to place bets on how this year’s competition will play out.
2019 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest Men’s Odds
Who Will Win Men’s 2019 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest? | Odds |
---|---|
Joey Chestnut | -900 |
Field | +500 |
*All odds taken 06/19/19
Out of the last twelve years, American “competitive eater” (that’s a thing, apparently) Joey Chestnut has won this title. Only one upset (in 2015, when he lost to Matt Stonie) has broken Chestnut’s impressive streak.
Given his insane winning run, it’s pretty safe to say Chestnut has this one in the bag. Few men would want to tackle his record, and even those who have been interested have proven they can’t measure up year after year.
Pick: Joey Chestnut (-900)
Total Number of Hot Dogs Eaten by the Men’s Champion

---|---|
Over 73.5 | +120 |
Under 73.5 | -160 |
Chestnut has beaten the record multiple times, most notably with last year’s impressive score of 74 hot dogs eaten. The trend has climbed and climbed in recent years, but it’s considered that he’s made the record so high that he won’t be able to even match it, let alone succeed it.

74 hot dogs is a hell of a lot of food, and judging by last year’s insane record, this seems like the year that number will trend lower. Something’s got to give, after all.
Pick: Under 73.5 (-160)
2019 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest Women’s Odds
Who Will Win Women’s 2019 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest? | Odds |
---|---|
Miki Sudo | -1200 |
Field | +600 |
Similar to Joey Chestnut’s winning streak, we see a trend in the women’s competition of a repeat winner. In this category, we have American power eater Miki Sudo, who has won this championship consistently for the past half decade.
Since 2014, Sudo has been proven unstoppable. After dethroning Sonya Thomas (the inaugural winner in the women’s competition who won for the first three years in this category), Sudo has proven her worth as a crazy impressive hot dog eater. I mean, props to ya, girl.
Pick: Miki Sudo (-1200)
Total Number of Hot Dogs Eaten by the Women’s Champion
How Many Hot Dogs Will Winner of Women’s Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest Eat? | Odds |
---|---|
Over 38.5 | -120 |
Under 38.5 | -120 |
Sudo shattered her own hot dog eating record in 2017 when she managed to scarf down 41 wieners. Her score may have dipped to 37 last year, but will it climb back up this year?

In terms of odds, it’s a completely even betting ground given the roller coaster history in this relatively new category. Considering Nathan’s only added a women’s field less than a decade ago, it’s still hard to follow the trend here.
But it’s more likely that Sudo is going to aim for a comeback after last year’s slightly disappointing score. It’s probable she will beat her score from last year.
Pick: Over 38.5 (-120)
