  • Devon Dotson decided to return to the Kansas Jayhawks
  • Myles Powell is back for Seton Hall, who have very high expectations in 2019-20
  • The Washington Huskies lost Pac-12 Player of the Year Jaylen Nowell to the NBA Draft

Wednesday was a big day in college basketball as it was deadline for players to stay in the 2019 NBA Draft or to withdraw their names and return to college. Their decisions weren’t easy, and in many cases have already had a big impact on 2020 NCAA Men’s Tournament odds.

Let’s take a look at which teams got a boost and which teams lost out.

2020 NCAA Tournament Odds

Team Odds

Kentucky +750
Michigan State +800
Virginia +800
Michigan +1200
North Carolina +1400
Gonzaga +1600

Jayhawks Get Dotson Back

It was an odd day for the Jayhawks. They surprisingly got Devon Dotson back, and also got Quintin Grimes back, but he decided to transfer. The team missed out on RJ Hampton, the no. 5 recruit in the country, who decided to go to New Zealand.

There’s no question that had the Jayhawks gotten all three, it would have been a slam dunk. However, getting Dotson back alone is a huge coup. Dotson should be among the top point guards in the country and he’ll help balance out a roster that has plenty of beef inside with Udoka Azubuike, Silvio De Sousa, and David McCormack.

Look Out for Louisville

The Cardinals are welcoming a top 10 recruiting class but some weren’t sure if they’d maintain their status in the ACC if Jordan Nwora departed for the NBA Draft. Well, he decided to return and he brings back the 17 points per game he averaged for the Cardinals last season.

Chris Mack has got something cooking at Louisville as this team will be dangerous next season. Junior forward Steven Enoch also decided to return, so with several other rotation players back, Nwora returning and a solid recruiting class, this team might be a decent bet to win the ACC next year.

Sky High Expectations for Seton Hall

Myles Powell is back for the Seton Hall Pirates, which means they’ll enter the 2019-20 season with higher expectations than we’ve seen in a long time. Many rankings have them as a top 10 or top 15 team.

Powell is going to be one of the top scorers in college basketball next season. Almost all of the rest of the team is back outside of Michael Nzei. With four-star recruit Tyrese Samuel coming in along with shot-blocker Ike Obiagu, watch out for Seton Hall in the Big East.

LSU Ready to Compete Again in SEC

There was no question that Naz Reid and Tremont Waters were going to go to the NBA Draft. What we were wondering about was everyone else. Javonte Smart is back, as is Emmitt Williams, Skylar Mays, and Marlon Taylor. That’s huge news for the Tigers. Along with incoming five-star recruit Trendon Waters, the Tigers should once again be competitive in the SEC.

Huskies Take a Hit

The Huskies looked like a team on the rise when they managed to add Isaiah Stewart and Jaden McDaniels, both of whom are top 10 freshmen. Then they also lured Quade Green from Kentucky. Things were looking up.

However, they took a sizable hit on Wednesday when Jaylen Nowell decided to stay in the NBA Draft. That’s a big loss as he was the Pac-12 Player of the Year. With him back, this team would have been one of the favorites in the conference. Without, they’re a bit of a wild card.

Houston Suffers Big Losses

The Houston Cougars have been excellent under Kelvin Sampson. They’ve won 60 games over the last two seasons. Approaching that 30-win mark in 2019-20 will be challenging, though, given what they’ve lost.

Armoni Brooks decided to stay in the draft and we already knew that Corey Davis Jr. would bounce too. That removes the only two double-figure scorers off this roster. Galen Robinson and Breaon Brady also left, which pulls two more starters off the roster. That’s a lot for this team to overcome.
