The Stanley Cup is currently happening which means the NHL awards season is almost here, and Norris Trophy odds have once again been updated. Up for the trophy are Mark Giordano, Brent Burns, and Victor Hedman.
All three defensemen had tremendous seasons and were expected to all be nominated for the trophy when the regular season came to a close. Both Burns and Hedman have won the award before, but it appears the sportsbooks are leaning towards Giordano winning his first Norris Trophy as he is a -1200 favorite.
NHL Norris Trophy Odds
Players | Odds |
---|---|
Mark Giordano | -1200 |
Brent Burns | +700 |
Victor Hedman | +1600 |
Odds Taken 05/28/19.
Although Giordano is the favorite to win the Norris, Burns is his closest competitor. Although the odds don’t show it, they were much closer in their stats than many think.

Burns was a key fixture for the Sharks all season long and played all 82 games and was one of their top-three players every game. Giordano, meanwhile, missed some games but was a huge reason why the Flames had such a shutdown defense.
Giordano vs Burns Stats
24:14 | Minutes Per Game | 25:06 |
74 | Points | 83 |
73 | Takeaways | 88 |
+39 | Plus/Minus | +13 |
144 | Blocks at Even Strength | 105 |
Both Giordano and Burns had a tremendous season, and it shows in their stats. However, as evident, the two were much closer in key statistics than the odds show. But, Giordano was just better over the course of the season and was the anchor of the Flames defense the entire season.
So, it is likely that Giordano will indeed win his first Norris trophy, though the odds are too high for my liking.
Is There Value on Giordano?
Look, Giordano is the favorite for a reason. He had a phenomenal season, but his odds are crazy high as there is a chance Burns does win. The Sharks defenseman had a great year, so too did Victor Hedman. The Lightning defenseman had 54 points, 97 blocks at eve- strength, 32 takeaways and played nearly 23 minutes a night.
All three of them have a shot to win the trophy, and if you are going to bet money, betting Giordano at -1200 odds makes little to no sense. You won’t make any money unless you bet a ridiculous amount of money. And, underdogs have won before, so I would expect people to lay money on Burns which, in turn, will lower the line on Giordano to a much better price.

Ultimately, this is a two-person race, as I believe Hedman has pretty much a zero percent chance of winning this. So, if you want to be risky, betting money on Burns will make you the most. But, like the oddsmakers, I agree that Giordano should be the favorite but that big of a favorite is absurd.
