A slew of fantastic athletes and celebrities will tee it up for the fun-yet-competitive American Century Celebrity Golf Tournament from July 12th-14th.

Tony Romo won this event for the first time last year, with John Smoltz finishing in tenth place. Who will be better this time around? Will either of them taste victory or is it more likely that someone else is crowned champion?

Coming off his victory last year, Romo will be feeling pretty good about his chances, particularly because he’s competed in two PGA Tour events this season to get his game sharper (though he missed the cut at both the Corales Championship and AT&T Byron Nelson).

Smoltz has competed in a pair of Champions Tour events this year, placing T-53rd at the Cologuard Classic and T-61st at the Mitsubishi Electric Classic. (There were no cuts in those events.) He also teed it up at last year’s US Senior Open.

In the 2017 edition of the American Century tourney, Smoltz was better than Romo, placing 9th to Romo’s 16th, which adds some intrigue to this prop bet. But Romo is the younger player with the higher upside.

Given that Mark Mulder won three straight events before Romo took him down last year (when Mulder finished second), I’d rather pick Mulder over both Romo & Smoltz, straight up. The field should also include Steph Curry, who is a fantastic golfer, along with Mardy Fish who’s always in contention.

What we do know for certain is that Charles Barkley will not end up victorious.
