Tsitsipas is on Fire Right Now

Tsitsipas was playing in qualifying tournaments last year as a 19-year-old, so it’s safe to say that he’s come a long way. He lost in the final at the Madrid Open on Sunday but that was his first loss in eight matches. Considering the loss came at the hand of no. 1 Novak Djokovic, that can be forgiven.

Tsitsipas is having an incredible May as he won the Millennium Estoril Open in Portugal, beating no. 4 David Goffin along the way, and then made a run to the Madrid final. He turned aside Adrian Mannarino, Fernando Verdasco, Alex Zverev and the King of Clay himself, Rafael Nadal.

Next up for him is another Roland Garros warm-up as he’ll be in Rome for the Internazionali BNL d’Italia. If he makes it deep into the tournament again, he’s going to be hard to pass up when betting on the French Open.

Nadal is Struggling

One of the reasons there is an opening for a guy like Tsitsipas – or others on the ATP Tour – is because Nadal is struggling. Could it be age? Could it be wear-and-tear? The 32-year-old hasn’t made it to the final of any clay-court event this year, which is shocking. Some feel he’s battling a wrist injury, but he’s denied it.

Nadal has won multiple – yes, multiple – clay-court titles in every single year since 2005, so to see him fail to even get to a final indicates that something is wrong. He had entered the year having won 35 of his last 36 matches on the red surface, but is just 9-3 this year. With him struggling, the door is open.

Tsitsipas is Worth a Bet

There’s no question that Tsitsipas has to be among the players you consider betting on at the 2019 French Open. He does well on clay and he’s playing really well right now. More importantly, he’s already defeated Nadal once on clay this season.

I would pass on guys like Alex Zverev as I have no faith in him winning it all and someone like Novak Djokovic doesn’t appeal to me because clay is his weakest surface and you’re not getting much of a payday. However, Tsitsipas is definitely worth a bet – especially at 33/1. He can genuinely win this.

I would wait and see what he does in Italy. Another deep run and this bet is a no-brainer. If he exits earlier, I’d still bet him but I’d bet less.
