- The AT&T Byron Nelson tees off Thursday, May 9th
- It’s the final tuneup before next week’s PGA Championship
- We’ve narrowed down the golfers with the best chance of emerging victorious
With the PGA Tour revamping its schedule, the AT&T Byron Nelson finds itself as the final tournament to prepare for the PGA Championship, which has moved up to May from August.
The field isn’t loaded with star power, but there are still a few big names competing along with local legend and former Cowboys QB Tony Romo, whom we’ll feature in an article on Tuesday with several prop bets to wager on.

Sungjae Im poised for first PGA Tour title?
Last year, 21-year old sensation Sungjae Im (+4000) led the Web.com money list from week one and never relinquished his grip on first place all season. He’s backed that up with a stellar rookie campaign on the PGA Tour, posting three top-four finishes.
Since 2013 at least 1 golfer who finished Top 5 in the https://t.co/G4q3Y7MjtM rankings won a PGA Tour event the following year. Here’s the Top 5 from this year:
1. Im Sung-jae
2. Denny McCarthy
3. Kramer Hickok
4. Bae Sang-moon
5. Anders Albertson— Kenny Kim (@KendoVT) September 24, 2018
None of these top five Web.com candidates have kept that streak alive on tour this season, but Im has led the charge and has the best chance. Only five guys ahead of Im in the FedEx Cup standings are teeing it up this week (Im is 23rd) positioning him well for his first victory.
Sungjae Im’s best PGA Tour finishes this season
Tournament | Result |
---|---|
Arnold Palmer Invitational | T-3rd |
Valspar Championship | T-4th |
Safeway Open | T-4th |
Waste Management Phoenix Open | T-7th |
Corales Puntacana Championship | T-7th |
Aaron Wise making case to defend title
This is just the second year that the tournament has been contested at Trinity Forest Golf Club, with another young sensation earning victory last year when Aaron Wise (+2500) emerged victorious at 21 years of age.

He’s coming off a pair of top-18 finishes at the Masters and Wells Fargo Championship so his form is peaking at a course he dismantled last year.
Let’s hope that, if he goes back-to-back, his kissing game isn’t so awkward this time around.
Last 5 AT&T Byron Nelson Champions
Year | Winner |
---|---|
2018 | Aaron Wise |
2017 | Billy Horschel |
2016 | Sergio Garcia |
2015 | Steven Bowditch |
2014 | Brendon Todd |
2019 AT&T Byron Nelson Best Value Picks
- Marc Leishman (+2800): Hasn’t been as strong following five top-four finishes earlier in the year (including win at CIMB Classic.) However, he was a runner-up to Wise a year ago at this track and did post a T-9 at the Match Play three tournaments ago.
- Ryan Palmer (+5000): Co-winner in his last event along with Jon Rahm in New Orleans to get the winless skid monkey off his back. Playing a home game this week and should take advantage of easier course as he’s 24th in strokes gained putting this season.
- Kelly Kraft (+27500): Last weeks champion Max Homa entered the week 300-1 to win, the second longest odds of a winner this season (Adam Long 500-1 at Desert Classic.) Kraft fits the bill of a boom or bust candidate like Homa.
