Mo Donegal won the 2022 race in 2:28.28. That wasn’t faster than 2021’s winner Essential Quality, but was just slightly faster than 2019’s winner Sir Winston, who won with a time of 2:28.30. 2020 was a shorter distance run during COVID.
Most Belmont Stakes Jockey Wins
Since 2010, only three jockeys have won multiple times at the Belmont Stakes.
That was Mike Smith with Justify (2018), Palace Malice (2013), and Drosselmeyer (2010).
And Joel Rosario won in 2019 with Sir Winston and in 2014 with Tonalist.
By winning on Essential Quality last year, Irad Ortiz Jr added his name to that group, having also won in 2016 on American Pharoah.
Most Belmont Stakes Trainer Wins
2021 was also a first-time Belmont Stakes win for trainer Brad H Cox.
He has a long way to go to catch the all-time leader of James Rowe who has trained eight winning Belmont horses. The last coming in 1931.
But Todd Pletcher is doing his best to close that gap, now with four Belmont wins, as the trainer of Essential Quality in 2022. Can he make it five in 2023?
