Penn State will try to keep its slim hopes of reaching the NCAA Tournament alive when it hosts Purdue at 7:00 pm ET Friday in a Big Ten game at the Bryce Jordan Center in State College.

Penn State ended its four-game losing streak Tuesday by squeaking by Nebraska 86-83 on the road as a 6.5-point favorite. However, the Nittany Lions are a longshot to reach the NCAAs with an 8-12 overall record and 5-11 mark in the Big Ten.

Purdue (15-8, 10-6) seems certain to be in the field of 68. The Boilermakers have won their last two games are slight road favorites in this matchup.

Brown Stops Penn State Skid

Junior guard Myreon Brown scored a career-high 29 points to lead Penn State on Tuesday night. He made six 3-pointers while finishing with 20-plus points for the sixth time this season.

Brown is Penn State’s leading scorer at 15.6 points a game. He has also taken care of the basketball, committing just 26 turnovers in 611 minutes played.

Jones was one of five Penn State players who scored in double figures along junior guard Myles Dread (16), senior guard Jamari Wheeler (13), junior guard Izaiah Brockington (11) and senior forward John Harrar (10).

Harrar also had 14 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. Wheeler stuffed the stat sheet by adding five rebounds, five assists and four steals. Dread also handed out five helpers.

Wheeler has scored in double figures three times in the last six games after doing so only once in the season’s first 14 games.

Following a streak of eight games in single digits, Dread has scored 10 or more points three times in the past four games.

Penn State outrebounded Nebraska 38-28 and forced 18 turnovers. That helped offset the Cornhuskers shooting 53.6% (30 of 56).

Brockington has a scoring average of 13.4 and sophomore forward Seth Lundy has a 10.1 mark.

Everyone Beats Nebraska

Purdue is also coming off a victory at Nebraska. The Boilermakers won 75-58 last Saturday and covered the 7.5-point spread.

Freshman guard Jaden Ivey led the way with 15 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. He made 6 of 12 field goal attempts while scoring in double digits for the fourth time in the last five games.

Junior guard Sasha Stefanovic broke out of his scoring slump with 14 points as he connected on 4 of 8 shots from 3-point range. Stefanovic failed to score in each of Purdue’s previous two games against Minnesota and Michigan State. He is a 42.9% shooter from long range.

Another freshman guard, Brandon Newman, also made a significant contribution. He finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists.

Purdue limited Nebraska to 21 points in the second half and has held each of last 12 opponents to 72 points or less.

Purdue won handily despite getting just nine points from leading scorer Trevon Williams. It marked the second time in the last 18 game that Williams was in single digits.

Williams is averaging 16.0 points, 9.1 rebounds and accounting for a whopping 37.2% of the Boilermakers’ shots when he is on the floor. He is the only Purdue player averaging double figures in scoring.

Boilermakers Dominates Series

Purdue has won 10 of its last 11 games against Penn State, including 80-72 on Jan. 17 at home as a four-point choice.

Stefanovic led five Purdue scorers in double figures with 15 points. Jones had a game-high 23 for Penn State, which shot just 32.9% (27 of 82) overall and 25.6% (10 of 39) on 3-pointers.

Purdue won despite making just 6 of 32 attempts from beyond the arc for a sickly 18.8%.

With Stefanovic heating back up following a bout with COVID-19, look for Purdue to easily better that percentage this time and swept the season series.
