Tony Yoka Looks to Drop the Hammer

Tony Yoka is ranked #10 by the IBF heading into this showdown. Having recently signed a promotional agreement with Top Rank and having recently acquired a new three-year visa, the long-awaited North American debut of the French fighter seems imminent for 2021.

While Yoka has a spotless professional record up until this juncture, it’s his amateur resume that reveals the true wealth of experience he has in the sweet science.

Tony Yoka would rise to become an Olympic gold medalist as his amateur capstone when he bested fellow undefeated pro Joe Joyce in a closely contested, controversial decision win at the 2016 games.

Tony Yoka’s last bout was a late-September victory in his native France via first-round TKO over fellow combative compatriot Johann Duhaupas.

A highlight reel KO, but that is unlikely to be replicated here. Hammer has the kind of vaunted toughness where you’ll have to pack a lunch for a guy that’s ready to give anyone in the world some rounds.

This prizefight marks another outing in Yoka’s native home country, but also one of the stiffer tests that he has faced so far as a pro.

Christian Hammer Looks to Blot Yoka’s Record

Hammer is a crafty veteran of over thirty professional bouts. He is a multi-time WBO European champion. Much like his adversary, he comes into Friday’s fight on the heels of a first-round TKO when he eviscerated Saul Farah.

It’s worth noting that Hammer’s opening frame victory over the near-one hundred fight warrior was in December of 2019.

Christian Hammer has been in there with some of the best to do it in his generation including, the present lineal/ WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury.

Yoka vs Hammer is a classic crossroads bout with the red hot, rising pro taking on the seasoned journeyman slugger.

The four-inch reach advantage of Yoka is evident. However, father time is also on the 28-year-old Yoka’s side in this outing with the 33-year-old Hammer.

Tony Yoka has an overall stoppage rate of 88 percent, but Hammer is one of the more durable heavyweights in the game having gone the distance with heavy-handed fighters like Alexander Povetkin and Luis Ortiz.

The last time Hammer was finished came when he retired on the stool against the consensus best heavyweight in the world today, the aforementioned Fury.

This prizefight is scheduled for twelve rounds, and many are torn on whether or not it goes the distance.

There are props for Yoka to win by KO or TKO (-275) and to win by decision (+250) so this duality is reflected by the oddsmakers.

Ultimately, I’m going with Yoka and the method of victory, in my estimation, will be via stoppage in either the fifth or sixth round (+750).

Pick: Tony Yoka (-2000)
